CDF’2008: Tauchen mit Ocean Encounters, Westpunt

Wie bereits erwähnt, ist der Westen von Curacao ruhiger und weniger besiedelt, als der östliche Teil, wo sich die Hauptstadt und die meisten Hotels befinden. Aber wir hatten dennoch einige unserer besten Tauchgänge im Westen. Ocean Encounters West bietet auch Bootstauchgänge an und wir haben sie begleitet, um die drei Top-Spots der Gegend zu betauchen: Watamula, Airplane Wreck und Mushroom Forest. Gutes Tauchen am Ende der Insel

Ocean Encounters West liegt so ziemlich am letzten Zipfel von Westpunt. Trotzdem findet man ein gut ausgerüstetes Tauchcenter mit netter Atmosphäre vor – dazu kommt ein superfreundliches Team, ein Shop mit viel Auswahl (Andi hat jetzt eine neue Maske) und sogar ein Boot. Das ist nicht normal, denn normalerweise wird auf Curacao vom Ufer aus getaucht. Das Hausriff ist aber auch sehr schön und man kann sehr bequem am Pier einsteigen. Während wir zu Besuch waren, wurde am Hausriff auch ein Seepferdchen entdeckt. Der beste Ansprechpartner für Makro-Getier ist der Tauchlehrer Andreas Kaufmann, der immer weiß, wo gerade ein Anglerfisch, ein Seepferdchen (danke für die gute Beschreibung) oder etwas anderes, seltenes zu finden ist. Wir kamen aber hauptsächlich zum Bootstauchen und um die drei bekannten Spots Watamula, Mushroom Forest und Airplane Wreck zu betauchen.

Watamula ist ein sehr gesundes und vor allem eindrucksvolles Riff: schöne Korallen, riesige Schwämme und viele Weichkorallen gegen Ende des Tauchgangs – zwar nichts, was man nicht auch von Land aus sieht, aber einfach viel mehr und viel besser. Als wir hier getaucht sind, herrschte eine sehr leichte Strömung. Unserer Meinung nach das schönste Riff der Insel – und nur 5 Bootsminuten von Ocean Encounters West entfernt.

Das Airplane Wreck war für Andi mit am wichtigsten – hat er doch als einer der wenigen richtig gute Wrack-Aufnahmen vom letzten Jahr, als es noch völlig intakt war. Das Wrack, welches übrigens auf circa 18 Metern liegt, wurde nämlich im Laufe des Jahres von einem Sturm getroffen und liegt nun in mehreren Teilen da. Das ist zum Teil schade, weil es jetzt nämlich kein Cockpit mehr hat. Aber auch sehr schön, weil man jetzt zu Beispiel durch den Kabinenbereich wie durch einen Tunnel durch tauchen kann. Uns hat es auf jeden Fall sehr gefallen und wir haben den Tipp des Tauchcenters - doch auch mal das Riff anzuschauen - nicht befolgt ... wir waren einfach viel zu beschäftigt mit dem Wrack. Der Platz ist nur 2 Bootsminuten von Ocean Encounters West entfernt.

Mushroom Forest ist scheinbar DER berühmte Tauchplatz auf Curacao. Auch hier wird – wie bei Watamula – an einem Riffhang entlang getaucht. Allerdings ist das Riff hier nicht so vielfältig, sondern beeindruckt mit seinen Korallenformationen, die an riesige Pilze erinnern. Diese sind sehr schön, aber nach einer Weile auch etwas monoton. Aber immernoch ein super Tauchspot.
