very good camera
I've only had this camera for a few hours, but I like it already. The controls are simple and logical. The wi-fi feature works well. The picture quality seems quite nice to me (I put it into "vivid" color mode). So far so good. I'm rating it 4 stars instead of 5, just in case I find something not-so-good later on, but so far it's very good.

Bad focus problems, random flash, needs new firmware
I bought an S6 just before my trip to Disneyworld. Excited as anyone would be, I took a bunch of shots outside my house and then looked at them. Not only were most of the pictures out of focus, but the flash would come on when in full zoom in broad daylight. I chalked it up to a defective camera and exchanged it for another at Best Buy. Now I had to leave for my vacation the next day and did not have any time to play with it other than charge the battery and take a couple indoor shots. Just in case, I brought my Nikon 5600 also.
Long story short, the focus problems still existed with the S6, the flash still came on for no reason, the camera would use a shutter speed more than 1/60 of a second in bright sunlight (some shots were 1/29th or something similar!). Pretty much all the photos need one or two sharpening passes in Photoshop to make them look decent, and it basically took worse pictures than my 5600 and my 4300. I would not recommend this camera until they work out the bugs in the firmware. The LCD display is great (3"), and the recycle time for the flash and saving pictures is great (<=1 second most of the time) but that is all I can say that is good.
I am going to send a cd of pictures to Nikon and see what they say. Maybe they just got a bad batch, but I got my camera from two different stores. If you do buy this camera, I hope you don't have the same problems as I did. I returned the S6 for a refund and am going to buy a D70s instead. The S6 is nowhere in the same league as the D70s, but I expected the S6, being 2 or three generations later than my 4300, to take better pictures.

not bad but not awesome
The best part of this camera is the wifi capability. The picture quality is decent as long as vivid color mode is there. The flash is a bit strong in my opinion so better pictures are found with the slow sync flash. If you're willing to tweak the settings, you'll get some great pictures, but don't expect great thing straight out of the box. Also if nikon can get a firmware fix for the bad blur, this would be a much better camera

I love this camera
I have no clue what people complaining about this camera are talking about. S6 is a great camera. It takes excelent photos and has tons of cool features. I use a 2Gb SD Mem for taking pictures and movie clips. And I never had any memory problem what so ever (even by taking tons of long movie clips). I push Easy Transfer button time to time and leting it to transfer everything in memory to my computer (in my web photo album). Comparing picture quality to my SLR D70s, this camera is a bit behind but come on. This is only a point and shoot camera. Compare apple with apple. So, no long USB connection, no memory problem and excelent quality. Five of Five for S6.

shutter and focus problems --
After much research on the S6, I decided to give the S6 a shot. The main features that attracted me were the large LCD screen, ease of use of the menu, and its light weight. The wireless feature was really a ho-hum.
After the purchase the LCD screen lived up to its billing, but without an additional glass eye-piece, the glare in bright daylight was quite concerning. It was difficult to see the picture and determine if flash would be necessary. You need flash in bright sunny conditions to get rid of the eye shadows.
However my disappointment was that the shutter failed after about 80 pictures. It kept giving me a "Shutter Initialization Failure". I learnt that the shutter had failed and it was time to return the camera. I have since exchanged the piece and highly recommend buying the extra warranty if you intend to buy this camera.
I was quite pleased, while the camera worked, with the ease of use of the menu and selecting the settings. The camera has about 6 canned settings for portrait, landscape etc., in addition there is red-eye elimination and flash that can be automatic or manual.
The digital zoom is quite lousy though; as the light weight of the camera makes eliminating handshake very hard and the digital zoom ends up extremely blurred.
The camera is made in Indonesia under NIKON design.
cheers

Not good, not bad
I bought this camera on Amazon and had it for a week now. I don't know if this is a problem because I have not had many cameras to compare it to, but the flash comes on broad daylight. The pictures appear a level darker than it should be. Because the flash comes on on broadday light, I try to turn off the flash but the red hand (blur warning) keeps appearing to notify me that the picture will be blurry. I don't think I can use this camera without the flash on at all times. I thought Nikon makes one of the best cameras, maybe this one is a boo boo.

Too high price for the quality of photos.
I have been wanting to upgrade my 5 MP HP digital camera. I have been researching cameras for awhile. I went to Best Buy and bought two Nikon S6. One for me and one for my 18 year old daughter. I wanted the newest camera out with at least a 6 MP that was compact. The S6 seemed like the best out for the money. I paid $387.00 each. When I used the camera for the day, I was not happy with the photos, looked to me like a 4 MP photo. My HP 5 MP takes way sharper photos. I took my S6 back today to Best buy, and yes had to pay restocking fee. Instead of buying a new one, I'm going to keep using my old 5 MP till it breaks. I kept one S6 for my daughter. Not a bad camera if it was priced better. Seems to be more like a $200.00 camera not a $400.00 camera. I did find it cheaper on line and got $90.00 off the one because Best Buy matched the price. I'm going to keep researching, too many products to choose from.

Don't Even Bother.
In concept, this is a really cool device. It has a big, beautiful screen, it's fast, and it has lots of great features. Unfortunately it falls short in its primary purpose: taking good pictures. I was very disappointed in the picture quality of this camera. The pictures were very noisy, and many were out of focus. Even photos taken in bright sunlight came out blurry. I compared the pictures taken with this camera to ones I took with my Canon Powershot A75, and the Canon pictures were consistently better. I really wanted to like this camera because it's a really cool design and it has a great user interface. I had to return it because the picture quality is not that great.

Flash complaints unnecessary
I don't own this camera, I gave it 5 stars because I can't write a review without selecting a star rating. I'm only in the market for a point and shoot accessory camera, but I'd like to just say this for someone who will read all of these reviews and be concerned about the "technical glitches" of the flash.
The flash coming on in broad daylight is not a problem. As one user pointed out, it's occassionaly necessary. It will usually never wash out your photos as it won't add enough light, and the camera will automatically compensate exposure anyway, so it doesn't matter. Any pro worth his weight in potato chips will occasionally use a flash in broad daylight. So that isn't a "glitch," but probably an improvement over older digital cameras with lower quality exposure determinations in the firmware.
As to the other complaints, obviously those should be considered. But I read so many complaints about the flash I decided to write.

Best Camera on the market
I was torn between several cameras but the Nikon is the best.
One thing that is overrated in cameras is the megapixels, they are just used as a marketing tool; anything over 5mp is fine for almost all photographers. What really matters is the shutters, lens, and properties. Here are some pros and cons of the camera:
+ The screen is bright, large, and detailed
+ The battery lasts quite a while
+ The camera itself is smaller
+ Transfers wirelessly to your computer
+ Buttons are easy and well designed
+ Picture quality is up to standard
+ NEVER get red eye with this camera, no need to edit afterward
+ Takes great pictures at night (lights, fireworks, ect)
+ Takes fantastic portraits because the camera automatically focuses on the face of the subject
- Sometimes the camera takes too long to take a picture, and if you have it on portrait mode it flashed 5-6 times before it snaps the photo
- The wireless transfers seem to take forever, sometimes I think it may be better to upload directly to the computer
- Every so often you will get a blurry picture (1 in 75 or so)

Very Good Digital Camera but defective
When I received My coolpix S6 I really liked the features and I could not wait to use it on my vacation. After a week the Coolpix S6 just stoped focusing. The LCD screen just turned black. Sent the camera 2 weeks ago still no response from Nikon. Good Camera but reliability is a problem. Would recommend extended warrenty.

very satisfied!
I ordered this camera as a replacement to the Nikon Coolpix 2100 that I had for over 2 years and absolutely loved!! I take a lot of pictures and wanted another Nikon since I believe them to be very user friendly as well as good quality cameras. I have no complaints with this camera. The large LCD screen is excellent and I have used it outside and had no problems with the sun being too bright (since this camera has no viewfinder). I printed the pictures already which came out very nice. I would definitely recommend this camera!

My coolness went way up after I bought this camera
This camera is awesome! It offers everything it says it will offer. Cool features, sleek body, don't talk back, that's way I like my women and cameras (ha ha just kidding). Overall it takes great pictures, which is what it really comes down to. The bad reviews are just from Cannon users who most likely don't even own the camera so pay no attention. I prefer Nikon, they make professional products for consumers at fair prices. Check out my web site to see some of the pictures I have taken with it. Cannon sucks!

Canon user recommends the Nikon CoolPix S6
It was time to upgrade my 2.0 MP Canon PowerShot S200 which is more than three years old (ancient in a digital world) to a camera which takes higher quality pictures. The newer Canon cameras had a larger screen, but it was basically the same camera. After a month, I am still pleased that I purchased the Nikon CoolPix S6:
+ push button to switch between camera versus play modes (versus a toggle slide which is hard on the nails)
+ easy-to-navigate mode and menu options with flywheel like an iPod
+ no telescopic lens = no annoying zoom sound during focus, on/off, less wear-and-tear on the most vulnerable component

Excellent Camera
I bought this camera around the beginning of July and have used it several times already. I've upgrade from a Nikon Coolpix 3200 to this one due to smaller, sleaker size and more megapixels. This camera takes excellent pictures, in broad daylight as well as in the dark. Red eye reduction is wonderful, however the flash does go off about 4 or 5 times. It's not broken... it's supposed to do that for everybody who thinks their camera has a glitch. Overall, I think this was definitely a good buy and am looking forward to taking the camera on vacation!

Great!!!
This is an excellent digital camera!!! The picture quality; features; design. 5 stars well earned

Incredible performance
Though being a Nikonist for years and knowing the possibilities of that camera I could never imagine the results and performance of this item, easy to handle, incredible small for the capacity and giving the same options to get the same quality of pictures than the D80.I have both.

Great Point and Shoot digital camera
I enjoy the convenience of a point and shoot digital camera. My Minolta Dimage X (about 15% small in size than this camera) had reached the end of its useful life, having been around for about 5 years. The Minolta had a 3/4" screen on the back. (this one has a 2.5" screen- great colors)
The best feature I liked about my old camera was the fact that there was not a telescoping zoom lens. I don't like the fact that a part that needs to move so often has the possibility to get gummed up and dirty. Therefore, I was excited that this camera had an internal zoom.
Tonight I was at a Bulls game, in the 300 section (nose bleed), and was able to zoom in and get a individual photo of Kirk Hinrich. The 3x optical zoom is incredible, but more so incredible is the digital zoom. I was also able to zoom into the jumbotron, and it looked as crisp as if I was taking the photo directly.
Action shots are GREAT. Low light shots are GREAT!
It is exactly what I was looking for !

Not the fanciest, but a great point and shoot
I purchased this camera after getting a junior mint stuck to the lense cover of my cannon. The cannon was bigger and bulkier, but came with more bells and whistles (color select, super awesome macro, 6x optical zoom). While this camera doesn't have all the fun extras the cannon did, it does have the small size, no extending lens to knock while shooting or get rained on (or junior mints stuck in) and the menu is easy enough to navigate that doing manual settings is almost do-able for a novice. in other words, there aren't so many extras clogging up the menu choices that you give up on what you were trying to do. While the macro on the cannon was better, the macro on the Nikon is good enough for the general point and shoot and the colors are FAR more saturated and in depth. The screen on the Nikon is also a lot larger. another cool feature is the battery. The Nikon uses a li-ion batter which you never have to remove from the camera housing. To charge the camera you simply plug it into the dock it comes w/, OR if traveling you can bring just the cable between the dock and the wall and use it to charge the camera. While the cannon was nice, I'm happy to have a cheaper smaller easier to use camera.

Good camera..
This is a good point and shoot that Nikon has come up with. The screen is HUGE and bright. The playback on this LCD is great. The camera itself is very light and very thin. It is the size of a credit card and about half the thickness of a cigarette pack. Taking photos is a snap and this camera starts up real quick. In general it performs like a champ.
Had a few issues with focusing correctly. SOmetimes the pictures would come out blurry, when they shouldn't have. The WIFI is a joke. I tried everything to set it up, BUT NO. It wouldn't work. I don't know anyone who has succeeded at this. if you are buying this camera for the WiFi -- DON'T.
OTHER THAN THAT - A SOLID SHOOTER.

Exactly what is expected from a Nikon product
The pictures are sharp and the colors are true. The extra large viewer is the envy of our friends. The only thing missing from this camera is image stabilization. It goes everywhere that we go, you know, we don't leave home without it.

Focus issues
So far, I like the camera and the quality of the pictures. Once you get used to the red eye flash going off numerous times before actually taking the picture (and possibly losing the moment) it's pretty neat. The screen is awsome! SO clear! Some of the scene settings DO require a tripod as the shutter speeds are a lot slower and thus can result in some shake. The one thing I am really not happy with is the macro feature. I love to take close up shots of insects, flowers and even nail art etc, but this has a very annoying feature: the camera focuses CONSTANTLY (in out, in out, in out) like it's having a convulsion or something. You have to try and grab the best focus (shot) when it is "doing its thing" and 9/10, the pic is blurred. I wish there was a way to just shut that off and focus it manually. It's pointless having the ability of a macro shot of as close as 1.6" if it's out of focus cause the camera can't make it's *&^%#$% mind up what it's doing! I AM going to write to Nikon and see if they can off any suggestions on this. Maybe there is some firmware that can be downloaded to fix it. I dunno. Other than that, I am very pleased with my purchase and WOULD recommend it!

I love this camera!
I have seen and worked with other digital cameras, and became boggled quite easily with all the options... not to say this one doesn't have them...
but, really, there are only a few buttons on the camera, and each one of them can get you to everything you need! I was a little scared with setting up the software to download my photos, and it was easy too! Everything was neatly spelled out for me, and extremely friendly. I use my camera every day, and I can get some fabulous up close photos of all the flowers in my garden, including any bugs inside, with the macro option, which is also a breeze to use! Buying and shipping were easy, too!

not worth it.
i got my camera back in february of 2007, and have been using it on and off. i also experienced the image stabilization problem, however, and the flash goes crazy sometimes. however the WORST problem happened today, when i was outside taking a picture like normal and the LCD screen just went completely black on me. any subsequent pictures i took all came out black, although i could view the previous pictures with no problem. i have since spent about three hours googling the problem and reading up on what others have to say, and it turns out nikon has this recurring problem with many of its models. most people have had to buy new cameras because the repairs cost about 180 dollars, unless you have a model which is covered under the service advisory that nikon put out regarding this issue. unfortunately, the s6 is NOT covered.
i gave this camera two stars because it was fine while it lasted. it wasn't the greatest, but it definitely screamed sleek and beautiful. i will not be make the mistake of buying another nikon camera again, however.

Not The best Camera
Love it when it works, had to send it in twice already for repair. Would not buy a small Nikon again, love my SLR though from Nikon. You get what you pay for.

Nice overall, but blurry with poor light, and wifi annoying to use
Pretty nice overall. Great screen! Good video capability! Works with all Windows, Mac, & Linux just fine via USB. The wifi is annoying to use on the camera, and also is only with Windows I think.
Taking pictures in the evening tends to have blurry results (often I am too close or too far for the flash to be much use.). Also, the flash is somewhat overly "hard" (rather than soft), so I don't really like how the pictures look with flash.
I wish it was easier to switch between video and photo modes.

Some excitement, some surprises!
Bought this as a present for my wife... works fine as a basic camera with low res video recording as well.
Love the following:
1. Size of the display screen - Ahhmazing!
2. handy - small enough to fit comfortably in pockets/ handbags
3. Simple to use.
Some surprises and disappointments were
1. Never could get the Wi-fi to work
2. Flash pictures taken at night have some white spots - I believe it could be due to the fact that the flash is too close to the lens.
3. While taking videos, the powerful microphone also records the noise of the lens focussing, which can be annoying if shooting in a quiet place without too much ambient noise.
4. Because there is no viewfinder, shooting in bright sunlight is a challenge - or an act of faith - you just have to trust that the camera will get what you want - but cant see in the bright light!
Will not highly recommend.
Enjoy!

Does not perform as priced
I paid a premium for wifi, which has never worked. The software required is buggy and poorly supported. When my Mac crashed while installing the software, the support person (who was not easily understandable) told me to reset my router. Support was a joke. The pictures quality has left me disappointed. I won't be buying another Nikon point and shoot.

Great Camera, would recommend
This is the first Nikon I have ever owned, and I am happy to say that I am impressed. I had a Sony cybershot DSC-1, and I used to think the pictures on that were great until I got this camera.
My situation was I brought my Sony to Florida and on the 2nd day, something happened, and the lense went out of focus. Went o some of the "same day repair" places down there to find out that it would be a min of $40 to look at it, and that situation would probably cost a min of $250.
At that point I started looking at what these shops had to offer and I came across this camera. I must admit at first I wanted to ignore it, thinking it was all hype over the great lens, and the wireless ability, but the more I looked at it, and thought about it, I started to get into it, and I will say the pictures it took after we bought it, were amazing.
I have some of the most clear pictures in the parks then I would have ever thought I would get. I would say this is probably the best purchase I have ever made, and even though I paid a little more for the camera then is posted here on amazon, I realize I was in a tourist trap, and he also threw in a 1gig high speed SD card for free...
