Excellent for novice, easy to use. Great built-in edit tool.
It is a excellent 10MP digital camera for novice. User friendly navigation menu, good tips for shooting in different environment.
Super fast response time (without flash), driving-mode is excellent, take up to 3 pictures per second and continuely until the internal memory is filled up (more than 12 pictures even with max quality SHQ mode), it allows you to pick which pictures you wanna save from the internal memory before really saving to the xD card.
One thing that I don't like is that you can't select the ISO when you turn on the Image Stabilization Mode, as the spec states "This mode boosts ISO sensitivity and shutter speed for capturing crisp, clear pictures", the trade off is the quality of the picture, a lot of noise on the image since high ISO speed is used, if you want to take good quality picture, don't use it.
Since ISO can set up to 6400, you can take pictures even in a dark environment, but the same draw back - quality will dramatically drop.

Good for novice, easy to use. Great built-in edit tool. But ISO boosting make bad quality of image.

Very unimpressed
We got our first batch of pictures developed a couple days ago and thought that the developer must have screwed up. Just to check, we took several of the same shots with our new 10MP Olympus and our 5yr old Canon (2MP). We had them developed by CVS (mistake) and Walgreens and noted that the Canon pictures were superior in each case. Why did we just spend $300 for this? I understand and appreciate that the default auto setting delivers lower quality, but I'm not going to be the only person using this, and if the auto setting is inferior to my five year old 2MP camera, I don't need it. Adding insult to injury, Amazon is not making this easy to return (their e-mail with the link to the return printout keeps coming sans link). I've made hundreds of orders from Amazon before and this is only my 2nd return.

Sending it back!
Don't let the 10 Megapixels fool you. This camera does not take great photos. Like the previous reviewer, I saw better photo quality from my old 3MP Fuji. If I want grainy photos, I can accomplish that with a less expensive camera.

Bad pictures, especially for 10 megapixels
We received this camera as a gift for christmas and took it out for pictures on new year's eve. i did not take too much time to familiarize myself with the camera as every other camera i have ever used was basically point and click with the best results on automatic mode. the following day i excitedly looked at the pictures expecting awesome results from our first 10 megapixel camera. well, i could not have been more disappointed. as the other reviews indicated, the pictures are grainy, blurry, and washed out. granted, i was in a dark, smoke filled bar, but i have had previous cameras with fewer megapixels that returned decent pictures under similar conditions. later, fooling around with the camera, even on the full auto mode, indoors, with average lighting, the camera still disappointed. like the other reviews, we ended up returning the camera. for 10 megapixles, i expect a lot more from a camera.

great camera
I love this camera, nice and small, yet a large screen to see the pictures and takes very nice pictures, Very powerful zoom , I have only had it a short while, but so far it's great.

Olympus Stylus 1000 10MP Digital Camera
Everything I was looking for in a small, compact, great quality camera.
|
All around great little camera!
I may be slightly biased, as I'm accustomed to using the Olympus camera, but speaking from the perspective of a novice, this is a nice camera for ease of use. It's compact enough to slip into the pocket...about the size of a cell phone. The size of the screen allows for easy viewing. The all-weather function will be a God-send in rain (I had another camera ruined that way). We've been very pleased with the color & quality of the photos. Indoor/low light has the warmth expected, and clarity if camera is held relatively still. Outdoor shots have bright color. And best of all, after my husband accidentally dropped my 2-week-old 7.5 meg Olympus, damaging it, we found we were able to purchase a 10 meg through Amazon for little more ($) and it came with a free 256 chip! 10 meg in this size and at this price! Amazing!

Good camera - Poor Basic Manual
This is a very good camera but I'm not too crazy about the software that is used to download it to my computer. Also, when I looked in the basic manual for instructions on how to format the 1 gig xD picture card, there was no information. I spent some time looking for the menu for formatting the card and eventually found it. Why can't people write manuals worth a damn?

Camera "so/so": Adorama "fair"
The Olympus Stylus 1000 was a disappointment. The pictures were not as good as my old Stylus 300 3.2MP camera at 1/3 the megapixels, so we returned it to Adorama. To Adorama's credit, they accepted the return beyond their 14 day limit and issued a full credit. It was, however, somewhat cumbersome dealing with them. I tried to reach them by phone, because I wanted to exchange the Olympus for another digital camera, but I could never get through using their "800" number. I finally got through by e-mail and simply returned the camera via certified mail with a letter indicating that I was interested in an exchange. They received the camera on January 9, but I never heard from them. I was able to reach them by phone on January 17, but only when I used their regular non-toll-free number. I believe that if I hadn't called, I would still be waiting for the credit. When I got through, a very nice woman named Hazel helped me and promptly issued the credit. Later that day, a representative from Adorama called me and asked if I was interested in an exchange. By then I was exasperated and declined.
Thanks for asking my opinion. I had intended to contact you about this.
Kind regards,

Only worked for a week
I bought this camera to replace my cannon camera. I thought the picture quality was excellent, but the menu and options were cumbersome to get to. Also, the charger was huge and very irritating to use. I bought this camera specifically for a vacation and it stopped working during the actual vacation. Needless to say, I was really upset. On a positive note, amazon refunded all my money and even paid for the return shipping.

Camera Okay, Software Horrible
There's a slight delay between pressing the shutter release and actually having it fire. Indoor pictures always seem overexposed. The $7 disposable film cameras in the grocery store take better pictures.
What's infuriating about this camera is the Olympus Master software that comes with it. It has context sensitive menus, so the icon you're looking for is often nowhere to be found. There's no File->Open or File->Save options, so you're forced to do things their way. In my opinion, both approaches to user interface design should be criminal. To be fair, you can figure out basic functions by reading the manual, but have no illusions that you'll be working for this camera more than this camera will be working for you.

stylish, but lacking some quality
I had originally bought this camera since I was impressed with all the features it came with. On the plus side, this camera has a lot of scene modes and makes a better than average point-and-shoot. But after trying some test shoots with dim lighting after setting it to "night scene," I noticed the shots were very grainy. ISO above 800 had a lot of noise, so I think it was a little silly to have settings up to 6400 ISO on this camera. Any shots taken at that ISO will be rather poor. I also tried the "available light" mode to to compensate for dim lighting conditions, this barely made a difference. I was also a little disappointed that this camera does not have a wide angle lense. I would recommend checking out some of the Fuji and Kodak compacts at comparable or lower prices. Higher megapixles does not define a great camera.

Olympus S1000
This is an excellent little camera it has many features and I have already recommended it to many friends and co-workers

Great little camera
Compact so it fits in you pocket, high tech enough to dance with it's bigger counterparts. This little camera does it all. I comparison shopped for several weeks comparing and contrasting multiple cameras from cannon, kodak, hp, sony, panasonic, and olympus, and none had features like this, a small size, and in this price range. The only advantage above the stylus 710 and 810 is the megapixel count, which does not make up for optical zoom, but can help with photo size if you do blow ups. It does have a 5x fine zoom also (at 3mpg).
10 megapixels, digital image stabilization, 2.5 inch lcd viewing screen, and a low price what you get. OH, DID I MENTION EXCELLENT PICTURES. I have played with this for several days now editing the photos, paling with the on-board and the computer imaging package, and I see nothing wrong with this camera for an everyday average user like me. And with it's weather resistence, nice for a clumsy average user like me. Also the battery life is very adequate, about 120 photos or more, with slide shows, editing ect... This is well worth the investment, saving your families memories in a fit and proper manner.
So if you feel you just need more megapixels, go ahead and get this camera for the extra money, but truely the advantages over a 710 or an 810 are minimal. Check out the new 740's 750's and 760's also.
Also, the Olympus Mastersoftware is very easy to use, And with panoramic feature, 3d, and Extra ART Features unlocked by Olympus Brand-Olympus Stamped Type H HD, this camera becomes even more of a pleasure to own. you can edit photos on the computer, or right in the palm of your hand. Both ways, this camera will make you feel like a pro in no time.

Very pleased. Lives up to its' promos.
I have several cameras, including a Nikon. I wanted something that would take quality shots, quick, easy, dependable. I checked Consumer Reports, read many reviews, talked to other folks. The pick of the litter was the Stylus.
Long battery life, compact, plenty of options if you want them. Or easy point and shoot. Great shots, easy to use, and compact. I can give it to my daughter (who knows nothing about cameras) for a trip, or an evening, and she makes the shots look like a pro did it. And I love the weather proof (or resistant, what ever) feature.
I don't think you can go wrong with this camera, and the price is unbeatable.

don't believe the specs
I am sure this camera operates well in a laboratory environment, but in a field environment--not so much. I think I will buy a Nikon next

What a Dud
I have tried to like this camera, but I haven't been successful.
For years, I have been a big fan of Olympus. This is my fourth Olympus digital camera. I started with a 520 (I think), and proceeded to a C-50 (the mechanics were a bit hinky). Then I purchased a Stylus 800. It is a fabulous camera. Finally, without hesitation, I purchased the Stylus 1000. Huge mistake.
This camera is slow, unreliable and not fun to use. It seems to have gone downhill in features, speed and range of use from the 800. You can't even make manual adjustments. The macro is terrible. I can't believe they put this camera on the market.
I will say that, under standard, optimal conditions, the photos are very nice but I don't have much interest in that as my only option.
Now, I have to figure out how to get rid of it. I'll lose money I can't afford. This is the end of my romance with Olympus.

Blurry Pics
For a 10 MP I was terribly disappointed with this camera. I didn't go in & start messing with all the dozens of tiny things you can change, I just went w/ auto setting & all my indoor pics of my daughter were blurry! I have a new baby on the way & need a camera that I know will be clear every time. I don't know why it was blurry & I really don't care. I am an avid picture taker & this one is just too much trouble! I did get better results when taking outdoor pics using the "Sunny Conditions" setting but like many other reviews say, you can't actually see the pics you are taking b/c of the lack of viewfinder (seems to be a common problem w/ this type of camera). The only way I got the indoor pics to come out clear (Indoor setting was terrible & DIS actually made it worse) was to go to Restore Factory Settings each time I used the camera! Since I never changed the settings to begin with, I don't know what the problem was. My 5MP Kodak Easyshare was so superior to this one!! The only reason I'm buying a new one is I wanted something more compact & this one def. lives up to that! It is tiny but the zoom is also terrible. I tried taking pics of my daughter at her first recital but not only were the pics blurry (I tried every setting!) I couldn't even zoom close enough to see her face! I missed those irreplaceable pics b/c of this crappy camera, do not buy it!!!

excellent pictures
details in pictures are awesome. Like all camera's you have to remember to pick the correct settings. Easy to use, compact, and alway ready.

Very content customer
I've been taking picture with this little fella for a few weeks now.
My snapshots taken at the highest resolution meant for poster size prints are receiving rave reviews from family and friends. For sharing images on the internet I reduce their size using 'The Gimp' a free photo software. Image stabilization takes a second to focus your image. Difficult to compose using the viewscreen in bright outdoor light (sunlit snowcover). I'll consider another Olympus model with built-in TTL and a much higher zoom for more demanding applications. Due to it very compact size this camera is a constant companion. Available on a moments notice. Just what I was looking for.

olympus stylus 1000 10mp digital camera
two reasons why this product does not come with 5 stars ... one, the super high quality 10 mp setting results in blurry shots unless one turns on the stability setting ... the shutter speed for 10mp is too slow for the human hand without this feature turned on .. the default setting for the camera should be with the stability feature turned on, not off. one can setup the stability fature, but i kind of stumbled onto this while playing with buttons and menues.... otherwise, one must hit the stability button each time one turns on the camera..... .... the second drawback of this camera is a pause time between still pics ... it feels like five seconds go by before one can take the next pic , an eternity when the action is fast. overall, great point and shoot camera.

This is a great camera~
I love this camera. It's very quick when taking multiple pictures. It's small and stylish, and very user friendly. I like how it has all those different settings to take pics in all type of settings (pun intended lol. I'm def finding plenty of occasions to try them all out. My friends have even threatened to take my camera away, lol.

Great Camera
Love this camera---Great pictures, easy to carry in purse, has all the bells and whistles I would ever need in a camera.
|
great camera for the price, give it a try!!!
I got this camera as a monther's day gift and absolutely love it. I was able to take awesome pictures right from the start. My only complaint, and it is not a bad one is I wish the date would print out on the actual photo itself. Other than that, I love everything about this camera. The in camera slideshow feature is awesome, and I love using the frames and words on my photos. I have probably taken over 200 pictures already, and only had to delete a handful or so of them, and it wasn't for blurred pictures, it was just ones I didn't like.
I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants a 10 megapixel resolution and the price is terrific. I would also recommend you purchase an xd card. I bought the olympus 512 H card, and it works great, I didn't even have to format it.
That's about all, give it a shot (no pun intended) if you don't like it send it back, but I think you will be very impressed with it.

very good camera for the price
This was a gift to my brother and I have to admit that I myself had a lot of fun using it in his name. I did not want to hand it back to him. Due to high mega pixel, the quality of the pictures taken is really good. Plus it is really easy to use and good as an introductory camera for people who are just getting into digital cameras.

Camera is great, As for Adorama-Wouldn't Buy From Them Again
I bought the camera through Adorama which is the supplier for amazon.
A conversation with an Adorama customer service person told me my camera would be mailed out on a Tues (I even have it in writing via a chat log). I kept calling to find out what happened (because I didn't get any tracking number confirmation via email) and they didn't even mail the camera out til over a week later. They have poor customer service representatives (who are rude) and even their managers are no help. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
The Olympus Stylus 1000 is a fabulous camera, it has everything you need at a great price. Its also very easy to use and has a nice LCD screen.

A Good Catch
I actually wanted to buy this camera for me and I asked my Godfather to buy it for me as a present. The first time I used it is when we went to a vacation. I really love the quality of this camera and its features. I was able to take photos with good quality and right lighting.

Not a good camera for families
Pros:
1. Solid feel. Seemed very durable.
2. Very easy to learn and use.
Cons:
1. Blurred pictures with the slightest movement.
We purchased this camera in December 2006. I don't remember what prompted me to buy this digital camera. I remember feeling a little frustrated that I couldn't find a camera that had absolutely stellar reviews across the board.
The main function of the camera would be for point and shoot opportunities for my family of six. Although I was interested in getting a camera that could grow with my interest in photography.
I initially loved the solid feel of the camera. It was also easy to learn and use. However, I immediately noticed that if the lighting conditions weren't perfect and one of my kids moved when I took the picture, (which is inevitable), they would look extremely blurry. Maybe there was some feature I could have used to correct this. But as a point and shoot it would not automatically correct itself in low light situations.
The camera was stolen a couple of months later. I bought the Fuji FinePix E900 to replace it and the performance is outstanding compared to the Olympus Stylus 1000.

Excellent
I bought this camera in January, and now I am buying the second one. Is excellent, good quality in the pictures, easy to use and a very good price for quality.
|
Easy use digital
Olympus Stylus 1000 Excellant entry level camera for new user in the digital area. Simple to use and understand, my wife who said she would never use one, loves it in just a couple weeks.
|
Awesome pictures
Olympus Stylus 1000 works great for me--I feel like these people who wrote bad reviews must have had a totally different camera. I was thrilled with my pictures--only a few blurry ones early on. And you know right away and can retake the picture. I used this camera to document summer reading programs for a library--so lots of kids moving around--indoor pictures, outdoor pictures, low light levels in the museum--all pictures came out great. A number of the pictures were even printed in area newspapers. A higher optical zoom would have been nice but at 10 megapixels I could enlarge the pictures on the computer and practically show finger prints and still have a crystal clear image. I love it.
|
Great Camera but watch out for Beach Cameras
I love this camera it is the best. I have used other digital camera's and other brands and none compare to this one for me. the only time i have ever had a probelm is when the battery is running low then it takes longer to capture the image.
My warning is to watch what you buy from this vendor (Beach Camera's) they neglect to tell you that they ship via FED-EX and that they require a signature in order for you to receive the product and they are very unhelpful when you contact them.

War Survivor
This little camera is an absolute champ. I purchased one before deploying to Iraq. I disarm Bombs for a living, so this camera has been exposed to a lot of over-pressure. I've been involved in Two direct hits from IEDs and while other electronics in my vehicle (some issued by the Army) couldn't handle the concussion inducing shock this guy has.
Oh yeah and besides taking abuse it takes amazingly detailed pictures.

Olympus Stylus 1000
I'm a remodeling contractor in northern California and I document all my projects from start to finish. I record the before, during and after conditions. This record of what is existing, what is in the walls and ceiling and under the floor have saved me on more than one occasion. The quality of 10 Megapixel CCD and image stabilization make it easy to get the qaulity I'm looking for. The fact that the camera is small and light weight makes it easy to fit in the shirt pocket when I need both my hands of other things. The all-weather construction helps to keep the camera in good working order for when I need it. The Quick Time movie mode has been helpful on several occasions. Oh, and a termite can almost fill the photograph, and boy does that make for an interesting conversation with a homeowner. Keep up the good work.

Don't Fall for the Temptation
I bought this camera for my daughter to go to college with. I have had digital cameras since they first came out. Every child in my home has one and they have been reliable, until now.
I really liked this camera despite a few issues with image noise at higher ISOs. The weather resistance was especially enticing and the solid metal build of the camera was reassuring. Was I ever mistaken. The lens will fail to retract one day for you but will try to several times and then shut off with the lens still out. I sent mine in and the "tech" declared this to be "drop" damage and not eligible for warranty repair. After some discussion with customer service at the supervisor level, I was able to lower the cost of repair but not elimiate it. Now, two months later, the same problem has occurred again. I sent a message to Olympus about this and have heard nothing back from them.
My opinion? Olympus knows they have cheap components in this camera and refuse to acknowledge it because of liability. Shame on them for refusing to deal with me or even offer assistance. I even asked for a copy of the service manual so I could fix it myself since I am very handy that way. NO RESPONSE.
I have had many digital cameras in my home. We are not abusive with our cameras as I cannot stand irresponsibility in handling expensive items or other people's property. We have never had this happen in 10 years of owning digital cameras. My kids have grown up with them and are quite good at using them. Now this happens.
I've lost good money on this camera in it's less than one year of life and Olympus could care less.
Let me help you, be forewarned.

One Significant Drawback!!
I have owned this camera for one year. I find the comments concerning blurred pictures puzzeling. In normal shooting situations such as daylight or when using the flash indoors the camera has provided exceptionally clear pictures and very excellent color reproduction. The one area that this camera fails is that it is very erratic when taking pictures in a dark enviornment such as a concert where there is low light but the subject is clearly visible to the naked eye. The camera's imaging system often shows a blurred image on the LCD and at times the picture taken is out of focus. It is not a function of subject movement as I have observed other people taking shots and their LCD view finder image is clear and crisp and the resulting pictures are much clearer then mine. It is a obvious short coming of this camera. I do find that if I shoot off a number of shots a few do come out very well, unfortunately, it's a crap shoot. All in all I enjoy using this camera overall and it has given me an incredible number of very excellent pictures.
