A stunner from Sony.Pros: great feature set, optics and build quality. Cons: None really. Sony has built in a lot of features for the money on what is clearly a winning platform. This camera is essentially the very, very competent DSC-W50 on steroids. Cool interface and all the fashionable (and desired) bells and whistles like face recognition, image stabilization and high ISO mean that the only thing missing is more zoom capability. However, nobody offers that in this price range! This ultra-cpable point and shoot delivers excellent performance in nearly all kinds of lighting conditions, plus the fact that a viewfinder is included, means that pictures can always be properly composed. The bionz processor is ultra fast and the image processing is top notch. Superior value for money. Sony has raised the bar instead of relying on their brand name as they were inclined to do to in the recent past. This spells bad news for the competition. |
Ultra Awesome CameraA great buy for those on the go. I use mine for business travel, it fits into a coat pocket and is always ready for exceptional pictures. Sony has hit the mark with this one.
In particular, I love the macro feature. Much of my work is in communications of ideas that are rather small. I can focus on an object at 1.5" and get a incredibly clear picture. Features are also great, from stills to movies with sound. In addition the manual view finder is great for those bright days when the LCD is harder to see. Buy you'll love it - nothing else like it. Worth every penny...I was looking for a small digital camera for my upcoming Disney trip in May. I didn't really want to spend alot of money, I just wanted something small, durable and that would produce decent pictures. I did a little bit of research online and kept coming across the Sony Cybershot DSCW80. A little more than I wanted to spend, but if it was a camera that was worth it, I would probably purchase it.
I am so impressed with this little camera! Usually when you have such high megapixels on a picture the actual save time to the memory is a little delayed - not so on this camera. You press the button to take the picture and it's almost instant! The camera is super small, so if you have big hands, you're probably not going to be very efficient with the small buttons. The features are pretty easy to navigate and figure out without having to go to the manual too much. The picture is PERFECT! I took some really amazing first shots with this camera - I am hooked! I highly recommend if you are looking for a small, amazing camera that you purchase this one. |
Great for the priceThis is a great camera for its price. This might be the best choice for its class because it provides IS (image stabilization for shaky hands and moving objects:anti blur), 2.5 inch lcd, 7.2 megapixels and 3x optical zoom for under $235. You can find different cameras with IS and with more pixels or zoom capabilities but you should also compare their price with this one. I researched alot before buying this camera and could not find any camera with IS under $300 (brand new, not used). Morover, this is very handy, tiny and light that you can carry in your pocket without feeling it. There are cameras out there with 10x optical zooms but you have to hire someone to carry it for you:) I will always prefer a tiny camera over a bulky one because those bulky ones are usually loaded with features that you will never need or use. Additionally, those bulky cameras are also much more expensive. You would end up paying high prices for features that you will never use.
I recommend you to buy at least 2gb of memory from e-bay.Buy from someone with high feedback score. I purchased a 2gb "high speed memory stick pro duo" for $20 (incl shipping) from e-bay. As time passes, as in every technological toy, you will be able to find cheaper and better. Menus and settings are very easy and clear. Information about the current settings appear on the lcd when you switch or push buttons for example when you switch mode dial to moon (one of the symbols on the dial) "Shoot low light scene without flash" explanation appears on the lcd for about 2 seconds which is very helpful. I wish you could have been able to charge the battery while its in the camera but you cannot. You need to carry the included charger if you are travelling. Carrying a cable for charging instead of a seperate charger would be better. However, battery life is very satisfying and better than its competitors. One of my disappointments about the camera (actually it is not a big deal) is you need to press too many buttons to delete an image. This is only case for deleting an image. Other menu shortcuts are great; however, I wish it had also a shortcut or a button for deleting since this is a digital camera and the great thing about these cameras is the ability to erase easily. My previous camera (Dsc-v1) had a button for erasig images on the menu buttons which was very easy and helpful. But with this camera, I had to press 5 times (on different buttons) before I can delete the last image taken. Overall, this is a very great camera for the price and features. One of the most important adventage is its IS (Image stabilization) feature. One of the best alternative for this camera is Canon PowerShot SD800 IS 7.1MP, in case you do not like DSC-W80, which you can buy around $300. Since I purchased Dsc-w80 for $230, I recommend sony over canon. |
Package Deal vs Single ItemWhen I received the camera I found that I needed to buy a memory stick. I went to Best Buy to get one. When I walked in the door they had a display with this camera plus the camera bag ($40 at Amazon) as well as a 1GB memory stick ($45 at Amazon) all for $20 more than I paid for the camera alone. I feel cheated!!!

Sony Does It AgainI bought the DCSW80 for my wife, to replace an old, slower Sony digital camera. After several weeks I find that I use it more than she does, because of the ease of operatin and portability. I love my Canon Rebel XTi, bt this Sony does 90% of what the Canon is capable of. The macro feature is even better than the Canon. At 7.2 mp, my enlargements are crisp and true to color. Yes, I would like to charge the camera battery while attached to the computer, but the battery life is extremely long, with the small Li-ion battery. The included charger is a bit slow, but I did find an after-market charger online that is faster.
A feature that I really enjoy is the slide show mode, with music and HD quality. Nice touch! I've owned many Sony products over the years, from an early 9" portable B/W TV, a Walkman, through a plasma TV, and have never been disappointed in the quality and features. Bravo Sony for another fine product!! |
best gift everMy husband got this camera for my birthday and I love it. So many options, great pictures, easy to use and fun!!

Excellent camera for the money. The Sony Cybershot DSCW80 has been an extremely versatile camera with numerous high-end features for a relatively low price.
The high points: Huge 7.2 megapixel resolution allows for clarity at pictures sizes of 12" by 18" and greater. Carl Zeiss lens for excellent picture clarity. Very fast start up time, and shot to shot time is quick. Huge LCD works great even in relatively low light situations. The low points: Some of the controls take a while to get used to. The 3X opitical zoom, while standard for the segment, is not sufficient. Overall: A mid-range camera with high-end features for a relatively low-end price! |
I'l loving it!I have a lot of difference digital cameras but when I saw this one I had to have it. It takes a sharp, clear picture. I am loving it.
|
sony cybershot dscw80This was a great camera my wife she loves it becouse it is so easy to use and its a sony I have bought 4 cameras and took them all back until I bought this one and she loves it. I Will never stray away from sony again.

Two anti-blur technologies for fair priceI have an old Olympus Camedia, it was getting old and I got tired of blurry pictures and dark pictures, so it was time to buy a new one.
I reviewed a lot of cameras before buy this one, first I considered a Panasonic for its optical stabilization (MegaOIS), later I consider a Fuji (Like the F30) for its great performance in low light (High ISO). Finally I found this Sony which has the better of the two worlds, high ISO (remember all the cameras has noise at high ISO) and Steady Shoot ®, for a very fair price of $250 it is a great camera. This is a 2007 camera, with a lot of extras like the face detection technology. I was not interested in the Megapixel count, if you are you better get the W90. I found easy to use and it takes great pictures, so far no more blurry pictures, I took pictures driving with excellent results. |
4th digital CameraI was a professional wedding photographer using medium format 120 film cameras. It was a good thing that I retired before the digital takeover. The speed of technological improvements both in cameras & computer programs would of broke my bank account. Happily there were & are some cheap consumer digital cameras made for the budget minded.
The 1st digital camera we bought around the turn of the century was the Cannon GS-1 3MP for appox $1000. It had an easy set-up & user friendly format. Sadly the camera was dropped while visiting Hearst Castle in August 2004 & stopped working a few weeks later. After this we decided to buy a semi-professional digital camera & chose the Sony DSC-F826 8MP which has a manual Zeiss 7X zoom lens. The camera is multi functional with infrared night vision & can take after market over head flash units, but it is rather slow in auto focus mode & the format wasn't as easy as the Cannon. The Sony DSC-F826 takes both CF cards & Sony Memory Sticks. Price was appox $1000 in 2004. Then my wife needed a smaller digital camera that had to use AA batteries for Eastern European visits so that we could buy batteries anywhere. We bought the Sony Cybershot DSC-W7 7.2MP for appox $400 in 2005. The camera was on sale because most people didn't want an AA battery powered camera. It has a similar format like the Sony DSC-F826 but simplified only because it has less functions. On the back of the camera is a large, bright, & fantastic LSD screen, but again was slow at focus when shooting. We bought the Sony Cybershot DSCW80 7.2MP because the speed of focus issue improved & the close up function was amazing, no need of a close up focus lens. You can walk up to any subject, no mater what size, & take the picture. The camera is also half the size of the Sony DSC-W7 & has an ISO rating of 3200 with face detection. Hopefully the advertised long life NP-BG-1 battery won't be an issue in Eastern Europe & we are thinking of giving the Sony DSC-W7 to our Russian relations. If you had Sony digital cameras before, the Sony DSCW80 functions are similar but are no longer mainly in a top dial, but are instead contained in a "HOME" button. When you want to review, you must go to "HOME" then go to "View Images" rather than turning the dial as in pervious cameras. Great price for the functions & ease, & the Sony Memory Sticks for this model are half in size & price. |
Great pictures but most of all user friendly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I have a hard time reading because of my eyes, I didn't have to read the entire manual to find out how to take a shot. The shots were perfect for me and that's saying a lot. I can't wait to take on vacation. Excellent product.
|
Great CameraI bought this for a friend. I've seen it functioning, and it is pretty cool. Highly recommended!!
|
Awesome camera for the priceI got this camera as a replacement for a Canon Elph 3 mega Pixel from 2004. I was always frustrated by the blurry pictures that I took with the Elph no matter what modes I choose. When it was time to retire the Elph, I went with the Sony based on other Sonys other people have had. I liked the speed of the shots, the Carl Zeiss len, the large display and the compact size. The new generation camera also tell you in English what mode you are in which is helpful for us who just want to take pictures and go. All the shots from the camera have been great even without the anti-blur feature turned on. My prints are clear and sharp. There is also a playback feature in the camera that adds music and transitions. I don't get the 400+ shots per battery charge as stated in the marketing materials but I do use the camera alot to preview what's been taken and to upload shots to my computer. Overall, very happy with this camera and recommend it for the point and shoot guy.

About averageMy Kodak V550 suddenly died and after reading the reviews for DSC-W80 I decided to purchase Sony. The picture quality is very good, but it is slow (I tried to take some pictures of my baby and by the time the camera snap the photos, my baby could be gone). My main complain is the video. Unless I use the highest quality setting (about 100Mg per minute) the video has bad resolution.
|
Best gift everBefore this I had a Kodak and a Canon. Both very good cameras. At the time of my first, the Kodak, Sony was very behind (i.e. cameras used floppy disks), so you can imagine my surprise with my new Cybershot. I like very much the software, espescially the slide show feature with music: even better when connected to the tv set. You also can edit images (crop red eye) you've taken directly on the camera. Plus, it comes with a very smart connection cable: it's usb AND video/audio, so you don't have to carry so many cables around.
|
Very Happy With My DSCW80Have had my camera for 3 weeks and been using it on business trips. This camera is as fast, maybe a little faster, then my Canon Digital Rebel. [Startup, auto-focus, getting ready for the next shot.]
The size is right, I don't have to carry a camera bag when traveling unlike with the Rebel. I had an old Sony that used the longer MS media, around 15 sticks. Overlooked, the fact that this camera uses the smaller Duo sticks. Had to replace them all. That was the only problem that I faced. The pictures are great, very natural, as long that I use the correct mode. Micro shots are unREAL. The detail is out-of-this-world. The "Steady Shoot" is better then the IS lens that I have with the Rebel. |
unimpressedI really had high hopes for this camera since my previous camera, Sony DSC P200, took such great shots (except in low light). I was hoping that with the new image stabilization that the W80 would make my shots more clear than before. Boy was I in for disappointment!
My low light shots without flash were all full of artifacts and very grainy. Not letting this bother me too much since this is hardly an SLR I took several shots with increased ISO. Still crap. With flash? Crap. Even when sunlight was coming directly through the window and hitting the subject I was photographing the photos were grainy! Regular outdoor shots left my subject looking soft and slightly out of focus with the surroundings almost completely washed out and over exposed. About the only good thing that I can say about this camera is that it performs beautifully with nearly no shutter lag and quick startup/shutdown times. I'm guessing this camera would be okay for those who are not anal about their photos and just want something small to slip into their pocket. Smaller sized photos should print okay, though I wouldn't expect anything spectacular. |
Easy to use cameraI've only had this camera for about a week, but I love how easy it is to use. I mainly bought it because with my aging eyes I wanted a screen that I could see without digging out my reading glasses. The pictures I have taken so far have been super clear: Landscapes, children and close-up flowers. I would highly recommend this camera for a lightweight easy to use camera that takes great snapshots.
|
Very happy with my CybershotGood:
- Small, good looking - Fast response - It has many postedition features - Good sensivity with low light - Good focus in macro mode Bad: - I have used it too little to find something bad |
Im so dissapointed!!I bought this camera a week ago, and i have to say that this camera is the worst camera i ever had.
Good things: Battery life great design Fast perfomance (without the face detection) Bad things: Worst white balance ever grainy pictures (indoors and outdoors..low light too) LCD Details in pictures Face detection only in auto and soft snap I preffer the W50! |
Sony DSCW80 Great CameraI bought this camera for my 14 year old granddaughter who is going on a student ambassador trip to England. It is a great camera and has all the settings she will need. Battery is easy to charge and holds a charge well. She wanted the movie mode and it is great. The smaller size makes it perfect for traveling. I bought her a 4GB memory stick so she won't have to change them too often. We looked at many many cameras before choosing this one and feel we made a very good choice.
|
cameralove it...did not ship as fast as other items I purchased that day...but none the less I am happy with the product
|
Worst camera experience EVER!I ordered this camera last month, and it worked fine for a week or two. ALl of a sudden the camera is refusing to be turned on and is displaying " turn camera off and on again" on the screen! this is a total rip off. I contacted amazon, and they aaid it will take TWO months to get a replacement!
Talk about terrible service! |
No regrets here...This camera is incredibly user-friendly, and more importantly equipped with fantastic features. In its price range, I don't think it could get much better...
|
Nice little camera - everything I expected to get.Things that I like:
Powers up lightening fast. It's hard to take a bad picture - the image stabilisation is a real nice feature. I tried hard to "make bad pictures" (walking around as I snap, bad lighting and objects near & far) and I am happy with this baby. I tested this out with a random snapping spree and got good results. 1 out of 10 pictures was out of focus. When I took the time to focus the lock is great. It also shot really well in my dark garage using the iso setting. The macro mode lets you get way too close to something and take a really good shot (I realized that you need to make sure that you are not using zoom and macro mode at the same time). The battery life is really great - I'm super happy with the speed of the clicking and it is really fast shot to shot. It also has a burst mode that performed well. My only negative here is the buttons. They are a bit small and I don't like the ergonomics of the buttons - just a little too small. It also has a mocroscopic memory, so buy a card - I got the 512k card and it holds hundereds of pictures. This is a great camera. I got it for my wife who is not a big-time photographer and it really fulfils it's "point & shoot" mission. I also like that is gives lots of visual feedback on the option wheel - it makes it really nice for novice photographers to get a nice shot and not be overly chanllenged by complex options. It also has different sounds it makes during operation so it helps you make a good shot. There is enough feedback but not too much. I really like this one. With the ease of use noted, it also takes a great picture. |
Fab little camera - a real joy!Great camera: I am an SLR person who wanted a comparable small camera for landscape shots on vacation, but did not want to lug around my 35mm cameras. Love the results!!
The camera is especially well priced for the extensive features offered - anti-blur, facial recognition, and intuitive to use. Various options for light settings, focal point and great results under low light situations without a flash. In fact I shot several nighttime scenes in starlight with great effect. The only negative is, as one reviewer aleady noted, slight blurring on the edges of Macro shots. I took a close-up of some text to test the camera and it was very clear up to the outer edges, which were less sharp. I highly reccommend this camera. In fact, my parents bought one after my extensive research & great experience with this Sony DSCW80!! |
good color, light weighti like it. it is the third digital camera I have. The last one, sony DSW-1 was broken by my self. The only problem is that I can not stamp date on the digital photo.
|
Very pleasedFor the price, this is a great camera. Easy, light, fast, and a good battery. I use it mainly to shoot candid shots of friends and capture scenic views of the cities I travel to and it works quite well for that! It has a lot more options on it than I will probably ever use...or will take the time to learn. So I stick mainly with the basic automatic functions and have played around with a few others. I've found that it's very self-explanatory and for the most part does exactly what I want it to do. I really like the ISO setting for low light. The only two really irritating things about the camera are that the power button is located too close to the shutter button and then sometimes I turn the camera off instead of taking a photo. The other is that during movies, if there is a lot of white glare somewhere, pink stripes will show up all across that area. I didn't read anyone else having this problem in other reviews, so I'm not sure if it's a "normal" problem or not. Oh and the software for downloading photos is nice, the red eye correction function is a bit sketchy and you can't edit any of the movies with it :-( But overall, I'm extremely pleased with this purchase and would highly reccommend it.
|
Small, Fast, EasyReview from a snap-shooter: I like it a lot - small and lightweight, good for fast action and I managed to operate it by intuition. Long battery life, big LCD screen, and a viewfinder! Downloads are simple (don't need the Sony software). A negative is that the little program settings wheel is easily rotated by accident, and all of a sudden you are taking a movie. I also seem to get a lot of overexposures in distance shots.
I had a Canon Digital Elph before (which I was very happy with), so that's what I'm comparing it to. |
Great Cost / BenefitI am a personal fan of Sony and this Camera is just one of their products that I own. The Camera is very good. It has all of the latest technologies that digital cameras has and its slightly smaller than the news ones with more than 7.2 Megapixels. The screen has a great size and overall the camera is a great buy.
I recommend buying if you are Regular to standard person that want a Camera with great features, modern, beautiful design, small size and good price. If you are a person that is more addicted in photography than i recommend searching other cameras. |
Once bitten twice shyCould you imagine that I bought this model DSC-W80 Silver twice. I went for it despite the reviews that say the pictures are not so good and you immediately realize that when you fix the pictures using softwares such as Adobe Photo Downloader. The only +ve point about Cybershot cameras are that they are bit user friendly.
First time I bought from Amazon, it worked fine for a week and then the Lens cover won't open fully. I called up Sony service and read their FAQs they have this stupid suggestion of "resetting the battery" which is like taking out the battery, charge it fully and reinsert it. Needless to less it didn't work because when the problem started the battery was charged fully anyway. I bought the same model from J&R NYC Store personally. I came home and started the camera, wow the very first string that lets you set the Date/time showed the variable names instead of English Sentences, something like "ID_STR_HOME_SET_CLOCK not...". Today I returned this camera. It's only because I bought the cameras from these reputed stores that are good enough to return your money that I have the courage to buy another one from them. But as far as Sony is concerned its certain that their cameras are poor both on hardware and software front. And they have the guts to say that the company doesn't refund money, talk to the retailer. Don't waste your money on Sony Cybershot, don't be decived by their good looks. |
Great Cam for the Non ProI bought this camera because I was taking a trip and I would be attending several concerts and I wanted to capture the moment. This camera took great outdoor shot and has an awesome landscape feature, combined with the zoom I was able to take great shots while in a moving vehicle. During the concerts I wish the pictures came out a little better. The low light setting was a disaster for me everything ended up red. However, overall it is a great camera for a non pro like me. I love the dial which gave me easy access to the menu features and the fact that it tells you on screen what each feature is used for. This camera had a great feel to it. It wasn't to small or big and bulky. I purchased the silver one, but it also comes in different colors which makes it very fashionable.
|
Not as good as I hopedThis camera in my opinion takes medicore pics at best. The controls are very easy to use and the wheel next to the screen makes changing your pic controls a snap. I have found that all the pics; still, motion up close and far away still have a very distinct blur that I would not expect from a 7.2 mp camera. It takes the same quality as my Sony cyber-shot 3.2 mp. They should drop the price at least $100.00.
|
This is a really nice camera!!I bought this camera for my girlfriend and she love it, it's easy to use and takes very nice pictures (I mean we're not professionals), it has a nice zoom (maybe not enough) and a well set of functions.
|
my 4 year old 2 mp nikon 1500 was betterI bought this camera as a point and shoot to carry in my pocket for pictures . After lenghty reading online, I had pretty much assumed it was given at this price point. I am constantly getting "motion" warnings and my pictures are often blurry. Where are all those "spectacular" pictures everybody is talking about? What's the good of a point and shoot that you can't simply pull out of your pocket and take a picture? There were smaller, slimmer and cheaper cameras I could have purchased at the time. I would NOT buy this camera again.
My regular pictures are sometimes blurry but always grainy but pictures taken in self timed mode are always blurry. I was comparing the pictures to my old nikon 1500 and i swere that camera was much better and much stronger than this delicate waste. I feel so bad that i gave off my old camera to someone. that one was so nice. anyway i returned this back to circuit city and got canon sd1000.hope this one works better. |
Good reviews - but okay camerabefore i bought this camera, i came on and read the reviews. everyone left comments on how great this camera was, so i decided to purchase it. guess they forgot to mention how crappy the zoom on this camera is. size wise wasnt too bad, but wish it was thinner.
|
Outstanding!Bought this for my wife-it's Pink and she's a Mary Kay Sales Director-perfect!!
She loves it! BUT -the camera is also OUTSTANDING-have had several other digitals-and all had shortcomings-hard to see screens, short battery life, etc. THIS Sony is amazing-compact,amazing battery life, user friendly, etc. Highly Recommended as a MUCH Much Better Than Average point and shoot. And-yes-you can "fiddle" with the settings too-but how many of us really do that? Resolution and zoom great too. This is a "can't go wrong" purchase!! |
Too coolllllllllllllllllllllIts a user friendly, not very delicate camera. Easy to handle, easy to click. Only short coming is with the Anti Shake - needs some improvement. Overall very satisfied.
|
Great price, compact size, user friendly, packed with features.I've owned this for about two weeks. Best price find was WalMart online site ordering. I love that each menu choice shows on screen a brief descriptive of what that function will do. This was about $100 less than a Canon Powershot sd800 that I was looking at as well. Couldn't justify the extra $ for only 0.8 more optical zoom, and less manual controls. I do love the photos I get with Auto settings. Those with larger hands/fingers may have a bit of getting used to the small buttons on back of camera, but I think the price and features are worth the adjustment. I think my battery life is good, especially if I use card reader ($10-$20+) to download pics to computer rather than using included cables as to not drain battery or wear on camera. I have no problem navigating the menu or with the battery and card door seeming flimsy, as I read in some reviews.
I'm not electronics-savy. This has been great for daily family photos so far. Also huge bonus that Sony kept the optical viewfinder, just incase sun is too bright to see the screen easily, though I haven't had this problem yet. The internal memory was sufficient for me to try it and be sure I was keeping the camera before opening the Memory Stick I purchased seperately. Overall, very pleased with my camera choice. Love the pocket size and ease of use, along with many extra features it offers. |
I love it!This is one of the best digital cameras ever. Its easy to use and takes awsome pictures. I love it! :)
|
Works for meI like this camera a lot. I'm a point and shot person and this camera does all that with ease and great quality. I've was looking for a camera for a month and this one was always high on my list. When it went on sale, I bought it and have been very happy and taking a lot of pictures because it requires little effort. It's small and powerful. I wanted something thin and sleek.

DSC-W80Excellent digital camera. 7.2 Megapixel is great for extreme detail up to about 10 feet. I use the camera mostly for documenting my house construction. The info lithium battery is the way to go in my experience. After taking about 100 pictures, viewing them on the camera more than a few times, and going through menu items - the battery still has almost a full charge. I will probably never go with digital camera's that use AA batteries again. The info lithium can easily get you through a couple days vacation on one full charge.

My first Digital CameraThe Sony W80/White digital camera is my first digital camera.I bought it for the specific reason that it was a SONY product and had the best features in its class.
This camera captures fabulous images even in low light conditions and I was surprised to see the difference in the images-shot-at-night by the SONY W80 and other digital cameras like canon and casio. The battery-stamina is the best in its class.....it can capture more than 300 shots until it drains all the charge...which I suppose is the highest I have seen.... This is the best camera loaded with all the features like Steady-Shot(Image Stabilisation),BIONZ-processor(W90 does not have this) Great LCD and everything that a first time user can ask for..... 4 stars becuase its not very competitively priced compared to that available from other vendors....BUT I CHOSE AMAZON BECAUSE THEY ARE SAFE FOR A FIRST TIME PURCHASE..(:)) |
great little camera!Light, thin camera that is very user-friendly and takes great pictures with very little effort. The multi-use cable is quite convenient as well-it's the best camera I've found for the money.
|
nice cameraOverall a very fine camera that is quite easy to use..pictures are sharp and LCD is easy to read. Hard to compare with my digital SLR, but easier to carry!!
|
Great item just like its brand name SonySony always make a great product. If you have more cash to burn, always buy this brand in all products.

"I Simply Love It!"That's the easiest way to describe this camera. When I finally decided to join the digital camera genre, I did a lot of research. I wanted a camera that I could just point and take pictures without needing a diagram on how to do it. I also wanted a digital camera that had some pretty nice features. Features that would grow with me, so once I learned how to use different features I wouldn't have to buy another camera so soon. So, for a newbie like me, this was the perfect digital camera. It was so easy to learn how to use and my prints are gorgeous! Even the pictures I took at night with little light came out awesome! The Image Stabilization is great, because I don't know how to hold a steady hand just yet. I chose black, because I wanted another camera color besides the usual silver. So, if you're looking for a camera that you won't out grow too soon and you're new to digital cameras, then I really recommend this one.

Sony, never perfect, but works well.I dont know what the deal is with Sony these days. Quick summary the new W line offers some improved performance, lighter pictures (better flash performance) compared to the previous darker cybershots cameras. However in this new W line. The menu system is NOT simple but more complex and in addition Sony removed the battery time remaing!!! Pffft, that does the user alot of good. Again Sony's greed shows prompting the user to get a faster charger and buying an additional battery becuase the user can not rely and guess the time remaining. I will give this camera a try if picture quality is anything like the negative reviews I will return and settle with the tried and proven W55. If this does pan out, it could rilval my F828.

Sony Cybershot DSCW80Happy with the camera - battery life is impressive. Display is not very sharp compared to friend's cameras in similar class. I was disappointed to receive the camera in navy when I ordered it in black. I bought off Amazon.com directly. Besides this happy with quality of camera and quality of photos taken so far.

Crooked PicturesSomething bizarre is happening with this camera, and I'm wondering if anyone else has the same issue. When I take pictures using the viewfinder, the pictures come out crooked. I've experimented with hundreds of pictures. When I square images in the viewfinder, the pictures always seem as if they dip a little to the left. When I deliberately offset images in the viewfinder to compensate for the dip, the images are corrected. So, when using the viewfinder, I have to always shoot images cockeyed in order to capture them correctly.
When I use the screen to frame images, I get slightly better results. However, I have to use the gridline feature, and I have to match the gridlines with something straight (such as a distant building or the horizon). Using this method, it takes me much longer to snap a picture. I thought I was just imagining things until I asked a few friends to try the camera. They definitely confirmed that something weird was going on. They claim that the viewfinder has a kind of fishbowl effect, which makes it hard to frame images. Overall, I find the camera easy to use. As a point-and-click camera, the image quality is excellent. However, until I can figure out how to shoot a straight image, I have to give this camera a low rating. |
Great product, Great price, Fast shippingThis is the perfect camera for someone who needs a simple to use camera for every situation, yet wants the added benefits of aperture adjustments, high resolution, stabilization, etc.
|
Great point-and-shootI had another Sony Cybershot that got wet (never, never let that happen) and really missed the ease of use. This camera is stylish as well as easy to use, and I loved the upgrade to "Super Steady Shot." No more problems with camera motion. The menu is larger and simpler to use and it has all the features I wanted, including video.
|
Nice in looks, average on performanceThe camera offers the latest in design and weight, but I had hoped more from it, especially since I was upgrading myself from by "archaic" Cybershot P72 (3.2 mp), which by the way, is still serving me well. I had hoped for sharper pictures, especially in low lights w/out using flash (on manual modes), but was frankly, disappointed. The image stabilization works well in outdoors, but not indoors, definitely not w/out flash. The menu is more complex, one of the things I had always held Sony in high regards for.
I also had a Canon SD 800 to compare with, and Sony really loses it there. I have been a loyal Sony customer from my childhood, but am sad to see my loyalties shifting. |
Great Digital Camera for Everyday UseThis is my second Sony Digital Camera and I'm extremely pleased with the ease of use and ability to take good crisp pictures and videos. Its small enough to fit in a little purse, but takes great pictures. The quality of the video is also good. Best benefit is a view finder and the screen at the back for the older folks who still like to take a picture by looking through the view finder.
|
You won't regret it!I just upgraded from my trusty 35mm to this digital camera. After researching for almost 2 weeks, I decided to buy this camera. It takes such sharp, crisp pics - even in low-light the pics have not been grainy. It's easy to use - very user-friendly, especially for someone like me who has just bought their first digital camera. I am so glad this is the one I chose. The video is great and the sound is clear. I really like the fact that you can get rid of red-eyes on the LCD screen before you develop the pics...there are so many great features - and for the price, you feel like you've stolen the camera. :-) And Amazon delivered much earlier than the timeframe they gave me - 5 stars for them, too.
|
Great Camera - a Must HaveA great camera that takes wonderful pictures with the aid of little or no need for a tutorial on the options it has. Many, many options to choose from. Pictures are really of a superior quality. Highly recommend this camera to anyone.

Okay pictures, poor quality control and customer serviceI purchased this camera 45 days ago. For the most part, I was happy with the pictures it took, the ISO is a huge improvement over the last digital camera I owned.
Mine had several issues, one of which I'm not sure is common among all of these, and one that is a defect. When the battery dies (and there is very little warning), the shudder remains open, exposing the camera lens to scratches. Within a month and a half of the shipping date of the camera, the zoom stopped working. Technical support has been outsourced overseas, and I had to spell very common words to the person I spoke with. It ultimately took 4 phone calls and over 2 hours to be issued authorization to return the camera. A credit will not be issued for 48 hours after the camera is returned, and Sony will only pay for FedEx ground. They estimate I will have my refund in 12 days. I plan on buying another camera from another company, and feel the wait time is out of line with how other companies deal with faulty merchandise. I don't know overall how good or bad Sony's quality control is, but I know that I will not deal with them as a company again assuming someone else makes a similar product in the same price range. The whole experience has been frustrating. |
Pretty cool cameraActually I have 2 digital cameras, both Sony brand, and I love it both of then. The second one is this pretty cool camera. My another camera is an excellent but huge Sony H2, with a very powerful lent and very useful when you are in a trip or in a tour in the forest, the beach or mountain, that camera is perfect, but it is a little unconfortable when you are in a party with your friends, at home or wherever another place in that you do not need a powerful zoom, so for that reason I bought this one, and it works fantastic
This camera is so nice, I bough the elegant black version, I love it, the quality of the pictures are amazing, the camera has a lot of really nice functions as face detection, steady shot, it is very slim, and come on guys IT'S A SONY CAMERA, do not forget about it the desing - so cool and elegant -, for that reason I think this camera is an excellent choise for whoever who needs a very nice, excellent and elegant digital camera... If you need to buy a nice camera with a lot of fun and advantages, buy this one, trust me |
Great value and good overallI am very happy with this camera. The pictures it takes are very good for a camera in this price category. For personal use, it provides me a great alternative to carrying my much heavier (and $2500) Canon EOS.
This camera is leight and small, which makes it a great camera to carry around on trips. The only thing I do not like about it is the door for the memory card, which pops open much too easily. I am sure I will break it off at some point, which will make the camera much less useful. Bummer that such a small detail detail may end up having a big impact. All in all, a good buy that I can recommend. |
Great cameraI have had Sony cameras before but this one is able to get great quality pictures with even with dim light.
I am just starting to explore the other fitures. |

I love this cameraI've been wanting a simple very small camera that I can point and shoot. This camera you can literally point and shoot and it takes perfect pictures every time. I haven't run into anything about this camera that I don't like. Our family went camping and there were beautiful sunsets, I think this camera was keeping up with my husbands Canon EOS Rebel XT, OK he could take some more intricate shots, but this one took some really great pictures. I would definitely recommend this camera.
|
AWESOME AND CHEAP!This is one of the best cameras right now for the its price. and it's sony so you can't go wrong.
|
I highly recommend this camera......and would suggest that you consider this one. The Carl Zeiss lens offers superb optical quality as compared to models without it. This has a great price and is easy to use. The LCD display is convenient and the traditional view finder is great for times when the glare is too much for the LCD. You can record movies with sound and play them back on the camera. You can also review instantly any image that you take so you'll always know exactly what you have. With the addition of a memory card you can shoot an amazing amount of images. The camera offers multiple modes including auto exposure, shooting in low light with and without flash, with a soft background, portraits, landscape with a distant focus, waterside scene with rich blue, red-eye reduction flash, and macro capability to list a few. It is small and lightweight, fitting into a pocket easily for quick point-and-shoot moments. I own this camera in silver and bought the second black one for my son who also recommends it.

Wonderful Sony digital cameraWe bought this camera for our 14 years old daughter this summer & She loves it very much. It's handy; easy to operate; & nice looking. The special effects to play back the pictures are wonderful. & of course, the resolutions of the picture are reliable because it's Sony's products. We had used Sony's camcorder and digital camera for so many years, & they never let us down.
One thing inconvenient is: Everytime to re-charge the battery, you need to remove it from the camera & insert it to the adaptor. That means, you have to wait for at least 2 hours before you can use it again. So make sure the battery is fully charged all the time to avoid missing good moment. |
sony dscw80, glad I bought itI had the Sony DSC W50. It worked well for its portability purpose. However,I dropped it on concrete. It still takes pictures, but there's no zoom. I bought the DSCW80 to replace it, mainly because the DSC W80 price came down the the DSC w50 price went up. I also chose it because all the W50 accessories would work with it (case, battery, memory, charger). I like the W80 much better. It is easy to use without having the manual as a constant companion. The ISO low light capability is MUCH better than the W50. It can take pictures that are brighter than the room itself. As usual, the lower the light, the grainier the picture. However, pictures come out fine with a decently lit room. There is some lag time between shots, but that will not have much impact on the way I photograph. The camera is very portable, can slip in a shirt pocket (beware of bending over), and takes great pictures. I'd have bought this camera in the first place had it been available at the time of the W50 purchase. I was able to take clear shots in low light with the stabilizer feature. The W50 shots were usually blurry in low light (no stabilizaton). Note that blur will occur in low light when photographing moving objects.
|
It's goodEven though it has the function that prevents the pic from blurring, when you have shaky hands. It doesn't work all the time. Overall the pics are good. It has a lot of functions that I don't really fuss with. It's a pretty camera, everyone says it's nice.
|
Terrible Pictures in Low LightMovie mode is great. The camera takes great outdoor pictures in bright light. But it is impossible to take a good picture indoor, no matter which setting I use. Even automatic setting doesn't work. All the pictures come out red and blurry. I can only use this camera for outdoor pictures and for video filming. I'm a little disappointed.
|
beware sony customer serviceIf you have problems or need accessories sony customer service is the most ignorant of all companies I have talked with. I wasted 3 hours with 5 sony people who had no understanding of a simple request for a multi use terminal and ac adaptor. I asked them to look in the booklet, they had none to review with me; I gave them a link to amazon to go to to see an image, they didn't have the ability to look, I guess their sony vaio is useless. What a very weird company. very difficult to accomplish anything. I am amazed they can even make anything.
|
VERY NICEI HAVE NO COMPLAINTS ON THE ITEM OTHER THAN THE USABILITY. I'VE ALWAYS HAD SONY CYBERSHOT CAMERAS & THIS ONE IS THE FIRST ONE I'VE OWNED THAT I HAD TO CONSULT THE MANUAL SEVERAL TIMES TO LEARN BASIC FUNCTIONS. IT IS HOWEVER, A NICE LOOKING AND HIGH QUALITY CAMERA - AS ARE ALL OF THE CYBERSHOTS.
|
GREAT!This camera is PERFECT! it's simple enough with not too many useless features, but takes amazing pictures and i just love it! It has face detection and on- camera editing so you can print your pictures right out! it only holds 13 pictures right on the camera, so i would reccomend buying a memory card. i did not think to at first, so im going to have to order one, but this camera is worth every penny and you wont regret spending the $200 for the quality.
|
Poor image quality in medium to low light, hard to avoid blurWe bought this camera as smaller alternative to our Digital Rebel SLR which is roughly 7MP as well. We wanted something smaller to take on quick trips, snapshots of the kids, etc... We were very dissapointed with the image quality, especially indoors where less light is available. Most of the images came our red and grainy, many were blurry. I have experience with photography and tried multiple settings, but the image quality still suffered. We are going to try to return this camera and get a point and shoot Canon and maybe spend a little bit more. The convienence and form factor are not worth it if the image quality is terrible. We should have stuck with Canon in the first place. :-(
|
So happy I chose this one! This camera takes beautiful photos, and the settings make sense. It turns on and off quickly and is ready to go when I need it. Very good value.
|
Good camera for the price!I had a Kodak and wanted something different that took better pictures. I have had a Kodak V550, V803, M883 and M753. Although the V550 came pretty close none of them took pictures as good as my Sony Cybershot DSC W80! I LOVE this camera. Although it doesn't have some of the features I really liked with my Kodaks, the quality of the pictures will make up for this. It takes great pictures outside in natural light as well as indoors in low light. I have tested it in poorly lit rooms with and without flash and both photos came out pretty good. Night shots are good if you can keep a fairly steady hand. In low light conditions there is minimal noise in the photos which I like. With this camera you will get the crisp, clear pictures you're looking for. The movie mode is good too, but I haven't tried out the "fine" mode becuase I haven't recieved my memory card yet. Its easy to use too. I figured out the menu within a few minutes without ever looking at the manuel. I would highly recommend this camera!

Great Compact Point-and-ShootThis camera more that matched my expectations. $230 was a little steep for a 14-year-old on a babysitting salary, but I have yet to regret the purchase.
The video mode is better than a camcorder, no lie. The sound is flawless and you can even adjust sound on the camera. The picture...never blurry or anything. The videos play on my 34" LCD with no fault! I'm totally taking advantage of this feature! The pictures are almost too amazing for me. The camera is a 7.2 megapixel, but I set my picture quality to 5 megapixel because it takes up less space and the pictures turn out beautiful. The image stabilization works really well. I tested it by waving my camera back and forth in the air and randomly took shots without stopping my camera. The weren't the least bit blurry! There are a few modes in this camera: Auto Adjustment (For shooting with preset settings) High Sensitivity (For Low Lighting) Soft Snap (Adds soft background, good for taking pics of people.) Twilight Portrait Twilight Landscape Beach Snow Video Prgram Auto (Allows more programming before taking the shot.) Also, you can remove red-eye, crop the photo, and do a bunch of other editing right on the camera! The lens is without flaw. I don't even need flash on my shots because the lens can take in enough light. You can play slideshows on your camera WITH MUSIC! There's so many things I like about this camera, I can't list them all. I love it so much. If you get this camera, you will not have regrets. It's only $230 max and worth the price. I have the pink one, but it comes in pink, silver, white, and black. Also, it looks bulky in pictures but it is really small. A little thicker than a casio but less length and width. Also, don't buy a camera that doesn't have a viewfinder. I was outside in the sun today and I couldn't see my screen! I love that this camera has a viewfinder! The Only Cons: *The battery takes 4.5 hours to charge (but it lasts a long time on full charge) *Sony uses memory stick PRO DUO instead of SD cards, but Circuit City has a deal that when you buy this camera, you get a free 1GB card (which is all you need.) I would reccomend this to anyone...it is really user friendly. Each setting you put it on show a description of what it is. Someone who has never used a digital camera could figure this out with ease! |
Lots of features and easy to useI'm an over 60 female and was shopping for my 3rd digital camera. I was looking for a camera that was compact, easy to use and took great pictures. The DSCW80 is all that and more. My hands sometimes shake, especially when I get tired, and the image stabilization in this camera completely solves that problem. The LED screen is large and easy to see, yet unlike most digitals, I have a viewfinder to fall back on in situations where I might have difficulty seeing the screen well. Great for these tired old eyes. Best of all, unlike my previous cameras, this one offers many features while being very easy to use. I don't have to wade through numerous menus to get to the most frequently used adjustments. This camera is everything I had hoped for and more.
|
excellent picture clarity.this is an excellent camera for the beginner who wants good picture clarity and easy transfers to your computer. I carry my sony cybershot wherever i go, and at this time im deployeed to afghanistan and the pictures taken will bring memorys for a lifetime. The extra battery will be a good option to add when you get this awesome camera.

SONY DSCW55 vs SONY DSCW80I am an amateur photographer and I own the DSCW55 and the DSCW80.
The image quality is good in both with the "Auto" Settings. The W55 is cheaper in cost and more sleeker than the W80. The W80 is the latest and the greatest, slightly bulkier and a little bit more expensive than the W55. |
Wonderful! Only one complaint...This is a great 'point & shoot' camera. It's small, with a nice size viewing screen, and the price is a bargain. The 3x zoom feature is more limited than I thought it would be. Otherwise, I love the camera!
|
A Good point 'n Shoot under Bright LightThis Digicam is good under bright lights, but when shot in indoor, the image looks dull & grainy. Sony Cybershot DSCW80 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom and Super Steady Shot (Pink)
|
Best buy!The camera is definetly good. The price is good, the design is gorgeous and the picture quality is amazing. I took many pictures of my dog in movement and they turned out to be better than I expected!
|
Viewing on television?Has anyone tried viewing the pictures on a television screen? I cannot get this feature to work.
|
Colr grains visible in almost all picsImage quality isnt upto the mark. I compared it with my sister's 3 year old Canon (5 mp), and canon gave much better pic quality. In this model, almost all pics have colors going bad when u zoom in the pic to 100 %.Also images arent sharp. I get the similar kind of pics which i get from camera phones. This is my 1st digital camera and I am not satisfied with it.
Esp indoors quality is poor even if u shoot at ISO 100. The color grains are visible in almost all pics. Also there 's no option to shoot less than 100 ISO. I probably wont recommend it. |
my wife loved the pinkThis is a cool camera. It has a very big and bright screen and is small enough to carry around in your pocket. My wife loved the pink color.

HAS NO WIDE ANGLE LENS AND USES AN EXPENSIVE AND HARD TO OBTAIN PROPRIETARY BATTERYArthur Schopenhauer once wrote: "Truth goes through 3 stages: First it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed, and third it is accepted as self-evident truth."
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." - Francois Voltaire UNLIKE YOUR AA BATTERIES, THE PROPRIETARY BATTERY MUST BE RECHARGED EVERY NIGHT OR YOU WILL END UP WITH .....A DEAD CAMERA! What you'll read below is more than merely my opinion. What you'll read are factual statements about this camera. This is a good camera except that it doesn't have a wide angle lens. You need a wide angle lens to take those beautiful shots of sky/land/clouds and photos of large buildings and monuments like The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. This camera also uses an expensive proprietary battery that is difficult to find at your local neighborhood drug and other stores. I suggest you also look at The Nikon Coolpix P50 which I found to be a "better choice" than this one. So, why give it one star, you ask? I give it one star because, for me, I would NOT buy this camera in preference to the Nikon P50. Because I would not buy this camera, for me it only rates one star. That does not say that it is a "bad" camera regarding its picture taking capabilities. You may love the camera and if it were the only camera on the market I might also. But, for me and possibly for you, The Nikon P50 is a better choice. If you wanna see some photos I took with the P50, send me an email: boland7214@aol Regarding the proprietary battery as compared with AA batteries, when you are out on safari in Africa living in a thatched hut or tent and your proprietary battery runs out of power, do you want to be running all over the jungle at night in a fruitless attempt to find a battery at a local "sari-sari" store while you hear lions and hei-enas roaring and sounding off all around you? With the Nikon P50, you can easily carry enough AA batteries with you on your trip so you won't have to risk your life searching for the proprietary battery all over the jungle on those cold nights with wild animals searching for YOU! Got it? :o) PS: There is also a Canon SD800 which has a wide angle lens and an optical viewfinder. I like that one also. But the "killer" for me on that one is the proprietary battery necceary to operate the Canon SD800 over the use of AA batteries used in The Nikon P50 that are very cheap and you can find in almost any store in the world. PPS: Why do you need an optical viewfinder when you have an LCD screen? The simple reason is that the LCD's SOMETIMES get "washed out" in bright sunlight. And, another reason, I think, is that the optical viewfinder is "faster to use" under "pressure circumstances" like when you want to "grab" that smile on your kids face. Why not have both is my opinion. If you disagree fine, but two ways to view and take photos seems better than one. It's just common sense. (Plus some people are "far sighted" and have difficulty clearly viewing a small LCD screen a few inches from their eyes.) So, you ask, "who needs a 28mm ?" You do! Most people concern themselves with how LONG is their telephoto lens. But, most people who "know" know that it is the WIDE ANGLE lens that is most important---most of the "best shots" are made with a WIDE ANGLE lens. For example, you're in Europe and you are trying to "get a shot" of that Cathedral of Notre Dame over there. You NEED a WIDE ANGLE lens. You are in the California Poppy Fields and you want to get the expanse of the golden-yellow poppy flowers with the huge blue sky filled with white clouds above---you need a WIDE ANGLE lens. You are sitting at thanksgiving dinner and you want to take a photo from the foot of the table with everyone sitting on the left and right---you NEED a WIDE ANGLE lens. You are in the garden of the California Mission and you want to take a photo of the ENTIRE garden surrounded by the mission walls---you NEED a WIDE ANGLE lens. It's Christmas day and you want a photo of the ENTIRE GROUP of visitors in front of the Christmas Tree---you NEED a WIDE ANGLE lens. This is where the 28mm lens comes in! Otherwise you'll be cutting off heads and leaving Aunt Sylvia out of the "Christmas Group Photo" this year---and she'll disinherit you and you'll live a life of poverty and misery everafter! :o) If you agree or disagree or know of ANY other digital point and shoot camera that has a WIDE ANGLE lens please write, Email:boland7214@aol. One more reason having an optical viewfinder is a good feature is that: If you don't have an optical viewfinder you'll have to use the LCD Screen ALL the time....thus using up more precious battery power--but with an optical viewfinder you can turn the LCD off and conserve battery power so you won't run out of electricity to power the camera. |
Decent small cameraDSCW80 is a decent camera. I am the owner of a Nikon D50 so this review may have a different reference point than others.
While DSCW80 lacks the option of manual settings, the auto modes do a decent job (note that the "manual" "P" mode is only a half-auto mode). In good light the pictures are crisp and clear but in low light conditions the camera performs just average, taking shots with a significant noise level despite the ISO 3200 capability. In fact pictures taken with over ISO 400 settings experience increased noise. This seems to be a problem common to all small cameras sporting small flash and lenses. If you want good pictures in low light conditions look towards cameras that have big lenses. Get a 2GB flash memory (Memory Stick Pro Duo) and you don't have to worry about running out of space - it should easily fit 600 shots, much more than your battery life... which is very good and offers decent recycle times with flash. Again, no comparison with a DSLR, but nothing to complain about. The movies are just OK, in no way this camera can replace a camcorder. I found the sound to be poor and the picture to be less fluid than desired. Other cameras on the market shoot much better in movie mode. But again, this is a camera, not a camcorder. On the low side this camera needs a proprietary cable (supplied) to connect to the USB port (Sony "wisdom"). You may be better off with a card reader than inserting/removing the cable to transfer pictures. Overall DSCW80 is decent camera to carry in your pocket when going on a trip or to a party and don't feel like carrying a big bag on your shoulder. |
Great camera especially for the price! We looked at this same camera at Sam's Club and even Walmart, and the price was still better on amazon.
|
Great pictures!Fabulous pictures in daylight or night time. My five year old never takes a bad picture with the double-anti-blur super-steady-shot features. It's dummy proof. Battery lasts and lasts. Great camera. Highly recommend. MUCH better than the older cybershot cameras.

Surprising SonyThe Sony Cyber-Shot DSCW80 surprised me at first. The "twilight" mode yielded some very nice (hand held) low light shots and almost everything I took (indoors and out) looked nice on my computer's screen. When I had prints of some of the photos made the Bionz image processor reared its ugly head. It blurred all the fine details away leaving me with nothing but noisy images. Keep in mind that this was at all ISO's. After that I decided the Sony and I were incompatible. I found the color representation to be inaccurate as well. Not horribly so, just off a bit too much for my liking. While the size of the LCD was good it was easily washed out in outdoor conditions (at least there is an actual optical viewfinder to fall back on but, unfortunately, it is inaccurate).
Some good traits are that the image stabilization worked very well and that the battery life was excellent. The continuous shooting mode was very fast. Auto focusing was pretty good. Video mode was surprisingly good but I think that a Memory Stick Pro Duo is necessary. This is easily the smallest and most portable compact camera that I tried. I really liked some of the small details like the metal tripod mount and the location of the door (on the side of the camera) so you can swap out the battery or memory card easily while leaving the camera on the tripod. This truly is a point & shoot camera. It would've been nice if Sony had allowed for some manual controls but, out of all the cameras I tested, it offered the least. To say the menu system is confusing is an understatement. I'm not a big fan of the proprietary Memory Stick Pro Duo that Sony users are stuck with. I'm also wary of the reliability and the customer service associated with this company and their cameras. In the end I just felt that there are better choices out there when considering cameras this price range. |
Horrible images taken at night - Excellent Video QualityI purchased Sony DSC-W80 in Amazon for $199. the product is nicely packed and shipping is super fast.
Product Quality: I always prefer Sony products, due to this reason i bought W80 instead of Canon SD750. I took photos day time, inside the house in low light are nice. I took almost 50 photos in Holloween city in Laguna Mall under yellow flood lights, First time I felt very bad on the quality it was horrible, no object is clearly visible, everything is blur or not clear. I took video at the same place it was excellent, I can say better than Cannon DC100 DVD camcorder movie quality. I took the camera for images not movie so I returned it, if somebody wants the images which i took i can share. Now i am buying Sony CX-7 HD 6.1 MP Video camera runs on Memory Stick. |
good, but not what I was expectingI used to own a P100 5mp cybershot camera. And I LOVED it. I was expecting this one to be even better, after reading the reviews. But it isn't as good. It's decent, but I would have paid the same amount to have the older version of the cybershot back.

Decent, but don't love itI have always purchased Sony digital cameras, this was my seventh and I have to admit it isn't my favorite. I bought it to replace my DSC-W7 (nothing wrong with the W7 just wanted something slimmer). Now Sont makes the sensors for Nikon, Canon (point and shoot) and Sony (obviously). I find this camera has a hard time focusing at times, almost like it can't lock on the subject. The interface is also updated and seems almost clunky. I will give the camera praise since it does handle low light without a lot of noise (unlike Panasonic and Kodak)

Sure ShotPerfect for our 18 year old daughter. Not too complicated, but great pictures. She's having a blast with it.

Great camera!Great camera, small size is perfect to take everywhere. Love the burst feature - great for capturing someone blowing out the candles on a cake. The video it takes is very good. Neat slideshow features. Battery life is excellent. Quality of pics is excellent.

Sony Cybershot DSCW80I shopped around WEEKS before making the decision to purchase this little pink camera. I love the size as I can take it with me in my purse everywhere I go. Two things I would mention - one, I can't find anything on the menu that allows me to crop and save an image onscreen (my old Sony had that capability), and two, it does not come with a memory card. I did however, find a 2 gig highspeed Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo online for just over $26 - a bargain!

What a wonderful camera! This camera is wonderful. I bought it over the summer, so I am a little disappointed to see such a drastic drop in price; but other than that I have very few complaints.
Pros: 1. This camera is extremely intuitive if you have any experience with other digitals or technology in general. 2. 'Steady Shot' feature really does keep images from becoming blurry. 3. Captures images very quickly compared to what I have been accustomed to with digital cameras=no weird double images if people shift after you take the picture. 4. The automatic settings make it easy for a novice to take decent pictures without a lot of skill. 5. Face detection is AMAZING! It lets you do some really nice things with editing ON the camera. 6. The camera is incredibly small and portable, but has great zoom capabilities for a point and shoot. 7. My old camera had 2-AA batteries to power it, I have to admit, the lithium ion battery is a VAST improvement. I took 6 minutes of video, and about 150 images on a half charged battery. 8. The video feature is great! The sound does not sound like a digital camera; it is right up there with a camcorder. Cons: 1. The camera does not use a standard USB with the small end cord to download photos to the computer. If you lose your cable, you have to buy another one from Sony. 2. The camera also does not take a standard SD card. This only bothered me because my laptop has a standard SD reader which would have been really handy when I misplaced my cord. |
Decent camera for the priceDecent camera. Only complaint is sometimes it takes blurry shots for no reason....stupid camera!

Very Solid Camera for Everyday UseThis camera is a bargain for what you get. I've had it for about three weeks now and am very pleased with the purchase.
The pictures look beautiful with a little in-camera tweaking (I set my program mode to -.3EV) and the camera starts up very quickly. I highly recommend taking staggered pictures indoors & outdoors at every setting and comparing it later to find the look that you like. Then lock in the settings for your favorite picture in the program mode and you're golden. The Zeiss lens is sharp, battery life is very good and the movies come out cleanly. The in-camera photoshop feature is quite entertaining (although a little pointless if you have Photoshop or ACDSee). My friends and I had a little fun adding dumb fisheye and B&W effects and viewing them back on the huge crystal-clear screen. I enjoyed the in-cam cropping until I realized that the cropped photo is the same size as the original. Doesn't quite make sense. At first I was a tad annoyed that there was no dedicated 'delete' button, but I quickly got over that with the 'multiple picture delete' feature, which speeds things up in the long run. I like the fact that it has a separate viewfinder, which is a feature that needs to be in more digital cameras now. It's not always appropriate to |
