Overview

On Saturday, Sunday and Monday we tried to get a few minutes with all the exhibitors who are involved in digital underwater photography. It was not an easy task! During noon the hall was crowded and everybody seemed to storm the equipment displays. We had to postpone some of our visits and have to admit that we forgot some exhibitors as time was pressuring us to return to Berlin on Monday. Also we killed too much beer with Berkley and Dan in Dortmund, the night before. But I'd rather not miss that experience! So far, all our formely just virtual friends from abroad [Eric, Derek and Ingvar] turned out to be absolutely fabulous! Now we have to add two more to that list. But.. "So many places but so little time..." *sighs*

At this point we like to apologize to the following people and companies, which we did not interview enough or forgot to take photos at their booth: Andreas Huber from Multimedia-Online.ch AG, Canon Deutschland GmbH, ewa-marine, Hartenberger Underwater Strobes, Ingo Vollmer from Marlin Tauchservice and Harald Hodorsch from Seacam. Hopefully our volunteer photographer Udo Strickrodt will find the time to supply us with additional photos.

Trends and thoughts
In general it seems that digital underwater photography is more and more becoming interesting to the established camera manufacturers. Olympus, Nikon and Canon got their own booths or were using their European dealers to show presence in the underwater community. Olympus and JVC were strongly promoted at the multimedia-online.ch AG booth. Nikon put their faith in the experienced hands of Rene Aumann and also Canon Germany finally took it's first plunge at the BOOT SHOW this year.

Another trend at the horizon might be the declining margins with digital photo housings. One indication for this trend is the huge range of digital underwater video housings compared to the years before. Some manufacturers even agreed that they were now focussing on this segment to maintain their business operational. It might be in the not too distant future that you will find also digital underwater video housings in digideep.com's database. We have been asked to do this a dozen times, now.

BS Kinetics [03/D71]
The BS Kinetics (formerly Bruder) booth featured a giant self-made shark puppet. Frank and Bodo welcomed us at their booth. Last year their changed their company name into BS Kinetics GmbH to take the support from Bodo into account. "BS" stands for Frank "B"ruder and Bodo "S"utterer Kinetics. BS Kinetics is the only manufacturer we know, who makes housings from carbon fibre which is lighter than machined and anodized aluminium. Next to the increasing video business their main focus is now on Minolta digital cameras [Please note that the Minolta inquiries were also increasing through digideep.com listing a Bruder housing for the DiMAGE]. They also showed their latest housings for the Nikon 5400 and Canon G3/G5 cameras. Frank announced that he is tempted to do a Canon 300D housing. Compared to the last years "we do any housing on demand" statement Bruder finally seems to give focus to their housing lineup.

Canon Deutschland GmbH [03/H65]

Lars and I both were surprised to see Canon Germany with an own booth dedicated to photography in the diving hall. In fact this might have been the reason why we forgot to take photos. Anyway Canon only showed what wetpixel'ers or digideep.com visitors already know. They displayed almost anything they have in their current portfolio for digital imaging, ranging from travel printers to digital SLRs and upper class zoom lenses. Several Canon employees explained to the visitors "why Canon is gooood… wink" and "how to use the Powershot housings". We think many visitors would have liked to walk home with one of the small housings but there was no sale on the Canon booth. For transactions you were suggested to visit the multimedia-online.ch AG booth. We wondered if the reps did not know that they would send their potential customers into a massive Olympus presentation. Sometimes business is strange…

Hugyfot (the artist formely known as..) [03/E67]
Mr. Rene Hugenschmidt was not on the expo anymore. He has retired in the proud age of 74. and informed us that he will relax on a ten week holiday. On the last expo he received an honorary award from "tauchen" magazine for his lifetimes work, which is machining very fashionable, small uw housings. There he also met Tom Leys from Greenforce and agreed that Greenforce is worthy to continue the Hugyfot housing philosophy and design. Rene Hugenschmidt was convinced that Greenforce will take care of the spirit and the quality of the Hugyfot housings.

Tom Leys is also an enthusiastic underwater photographer and always admired the Hugyfot housing he owns. He promised to continue the current Hugyfot lineup and overcome the capacity problems "Hugy" had faced during the last years. Tom assured us that he does not want to sacrifice design and the quality for moving to mass production. Hugyfot still enjoys a brilliant reputation among divers around the world. However the housings were handpicked and always considered as something special.

The first [and so far only] housing for the new Leica digilux II illustrates that Tom is going to keep his promise. It was designed on special request of Leica. They have been looking for a non-block styled housing. It was the first product completely brought to life from the new Hugyfot owners. The digilux II housing looks nice and unique in quality with the typical round shapes. As the price is comparably high for a non DSLR it will be only of interest for real Leica enthusiast. The price for the housing also takes this into account.

However I had to witness a weird scene when a real Leica-holic who could have been my grandfather suddenly appeared next to me at the Hartenberger booth. Grandpa tried to push the man behind the counter to manufacture a dedicated Leica strobe. [What for I still do not know]. He spread the latest news, that Leica finally went digital and that "Hugy" already made a housing for it. His eyes had the glow of a young boy opening his Christmas presents. I did not dare to explain technical details on digital to him and ruin his world picture. However he ruined mine J Maybe Leica really managed to find a gap to survive in the fierce-competition digital camera market. And overall aren't we just all big boys who want to play with big toys?

Another very interesting toy from Hugyfot is a prototype of an iPaq housing. Unlike the Leica this suits exactly the taste of my generation. All operation of the Handheld could be done without using the touch display. They just used buttons and we are not sure if this will be enough for other devices.

Tom had the idea when hearing about tech divers killing time with eating apples while doing their safety stop. He thought it would be nice to play games while decompressing. Also he showed us the demo of a fish logging tool they developed together with another partner. It allows you to mark fishes you have seen on the dive. Lars and I were amazed and thought it is about time to finally launch the [url=http://www.divelogger.com]http://www.divelogger.com[/url] website. Of course other applications like decompression calculations are possible. We will keep you updated on the progress of this very interesting prototype.

GUN-LUX [03/G60]
Gun Lux will stop producing housings for digital underwater cameras. They will focus on video cameras in the future.

Hartenberger [03/D15]
One of the high-price strobe manufactuers is Hartenberger. We used the chance to interview them on their thoughts about digital photography. So far they don't think that digital underwater photography is really a market for them. Strobes produced from Hartenberger are mainly done to keep up their prestige. Hartenberger will focus on underwater lights. But as we pointed the discussion to digital video lights it became more interesting to them. So we are looking forward what is coming up in the future and maybe will take place in our underwater video database soon.

Marlin Tauchservice [03/G54]
We passed the booth from Marlin Tauchservice on saturday morning. At this time the booth was already crowded, so that we had no chance to have a chat with Ingo Vollmer, the owner of Marlin Tauchservice. We had a short glimpse on the booth, which was mainly "filled" with video equipment. Only the Aquatica AS2pro housing for the Fuji S2 Pro, the Amphibico Surveyor 707 for the Sony DSC-F707 and a Nimar FinePix 6800 for the Fuji FinePix 6800 could be found on the booth.

Multimedia-Online.ch AG [03/H11]
Olympus partnered on the booth of multimedia-online.ch together with onderwaterhuis.nl. They presented almost the complete range of olympus housings. We could have a look to the new flash housing for the 5050 & 5060. Marco Heesbeen from onderwaterhuis.nl gave us some review comments about the new external flash and the housing. Althougt the strobe housing is of very high quality the power of the strobe is to less in his opinion. With a light number of 11 this could be a drawback for the first attempt of olympus to provide an underwater strobe to the underwater photography community.

Together with the Olypmpus tools almost every item of the Inon product range could be found on their booth. The Inon wide angle lense was from high interest on the booth. Unfortunately it cannot be used with the 5060, because of the internal wide angle lense of the 5060.

UW-Fotoservice, Rene Aumann [03/B61]
Rene Aumann has accompanied underwater photography in Germany for a long time. He is a certified Nikon Repair Center and also Sea & Sea dealer. Also you can consult him on properly housing your Nikon Camera and will get an very qualified independent advice. He is a dealer for various brands which offer Nikon underwater solutions (Fantasea Line, Sea & Sea, Sealux and UK-GERMANY). The Coolpix 4300/885 housing from Fantasea was displayed on the booth and we had an extensive chat on Nikon's decision to introduce own housings for the Coolpix 2200 and 3200.

Seacam [03/D42]
Seacams booth was the same as the year before, except for the fact that they displayed only digital housings. You could see three housings mastered by Harald Hodorsch, which were well presented in three glass cubes as if they were fine jewellery. On display were the Fuji S2 Pro, Canon EOS 1Ds and Nikon D100 housings. Everything was fully rigged up with the different types of interchangeable viewfinders available. Also the Seacam strobes made the silver design complete.

Sea and Sea [Aqualung]
In Germany Sea & Sea products are distributed by Aqualung. They had one of the largest booths we have seen on the show. A whole wall of their cube was reserved for underwater photography products. We were there to get the latest news on Sea & Sea products and meet Aqualung's Sea & Sea specialist Mr. Hermann Springer. Hermann originally did not plan to work on the expo. He visited Düsseldorf for private reasons and was kind enough to sacrifice some of his free time for meeting us. We are very thankful for that.

On the expo Aqualung introduced a complete new Sea & Sea catalogue. It also graphically illustrates all adapter and wide angle lens configurations possible. If you did not manage to get one copy on the BOOT the catalogue is available for local dealers.

Sealux [03/E33]
Milan Czapay and Andreas Kofka showed their new CX 420 housing for the Canon EX 420 Strobe. Its a solid metal housing with an additional light source, which can be used as modeling light or to help focusing in the dark of night dives.

Another trend that might come is that video and still cameras will merge and make up a third section. The Sony DCR-PC 330E is one of these cameras, which is a video camera at first but has a built in 3 MegaPixel Camera. The still images are stored on a Sony Memorystick. Sealux produced a housing called RC L330 for that camera, which supports the switch from video to still images.

Subal, Backscatter and Light & Motion [03/D27]
Rolf Sempert and A. Stepanek had visitors from the US on their booth. Light & Motion Product Manager Dan Baldocchi and Berkley White from Backscatter presented the new TOP DAWG housing together with other Light and Motion products. It was the first time for us to see the D100 housing from Light & Motion in real life. It is very impressive with all its electronics. With the handles you can control almost everything which is neccessary for taking a good shot whithout moving the housing away from the head. A special feature is the strobe control on the handles of the housing. It's no longer neccessary to make any modification on the strobe itself. Like the aperture control or the shutter speed the power of the strobes can be set easily from the handle. You can even set different power to the left and right strobe. For manual shooters like us this is an ergonomic dream. It's a pitty that light & Motion does not plan to make that dream come true for the Canon EOS 10D.

Subtronic GmbH [03/C54]
Subtronics, a German strobes manufacturer, presented two new strobes. The small mini digital and mini TTL, which are made especially for digital cameras. With a light number of 11 their power is not that strong, but it might be enough for macro shots. To use these strobes Subtronic designed a small device that converts the light signals from the internal strobe to some electronic signal which can be used with these small strobes. The bigger strobes like the mega will be modified with the next months. With this little device TTL can be used with digital cameras. Subal uses these little device in their housing for the Canon G5.

UK-GERMANY [03/B42]
The staff of UK-GERMANY were busy explaining their new housings to new customers when we came. The new 300D and 10D housing were the stars this time on the cozy booth. On the side of the booth the complete product range could be seen. We recently were able to test his 10D housing in the AquaDom and can recommend it to anyone who is looking for an extremely small and sturdy housing. It maintains to be the smallest housing in volume for operating a 15mm fisheye lense. This came in especially helpful when having to face the narrow photo conditions in the Aquadom also it allows you to travel light.

taucher.net [03/J81]
For our friends from taucher.net it was the first time with their own booth on the boot show. They were busy to explain taucher.net to people, which are not so familiar with the internet; with quite a success. The booth was always crowded as we showed up to check email wink.
Many thanks to Armin Süss the Chief Editor from taucher.net. He was so frienldy to give us access to their wireless internet connection. This little technical oasis within the "technical desert" of the boot show let us at least keep up to date with our forum and contest.
