British Underwater Image Festival Countdown

Brithish Underwater Image FestivalThe deadline for entries in the British Underwater Image Festival is drawing closer. Underwater photographers and videographers have only until 31 January to enter the Canon and Cameras Underwater-sponsored event, where winners and runners-up will be presented with more than £12,000 worth of prizes. The finalists of the 2008 Festival will be displayed at the three-day Go Diving! show, which is part of the Outdoors Show (http://www.theoutdoorsshow.co.uk).

The British Underwater Image Festival is being held at the Go Diving! show at Birmingham's NEC on 14-16 March 2008.

The British Society of Underwater Photographers (BSoUP) co-founder Colin Doeg will be heading this years judging panels. Stills images will be judged by highly acclaimed underwater photographers Alex Mustard, DIVE's editor Simon Rogerson and DIVE's senior correspondent and award winning photographer Charles Hood. The winners and runners up in the film categories will be chosen by the BBC Blue Planet and Planet Earth film-maker Peter Scoones, DIVE's editor Simon Rogerson and DIVE's designer Aynia Noever.

THE SUUNTO OPEN CATEGORY

FIRST: Suunto D9 with bracelet and transmitter, worth £1,150
SECOND: Suunto D9 with straps and transmitter, worth £1,020

THE PADI DIGITAL UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHER CATEGORY

Images must have been taken with a digital compact camera
FIRST: £500 cheque
SECOND: £300 cheque

Six prints to be arranged in two rows of three

RULES FOR PRINT STILLS


  • Maximum of six prints per entrant per category (Suunto Open, PADI Digital and Scubapro Young Photographer).
  • Maximum of one entry per person for the portfolio category.
  • There is no entry fee
  • Prints must be 10 inches x 7 inches or 10 inches x 8 inches with a border of at least 3mm on each edge, and will be mounted by DIVE
  • Portfolios must be six 5 inches x 7 inches with a border of at least 3mm on each edge, accompanied by a guide showing in which order they should be viewed, with three images on top and three on the bottom - again, they will be mounted by DIVE
  • All prints must be labeled on the reverse with photographer's name, category, where the picture was taken and equipment used.

30-minute maximum documentary-style
FIRST: Proton Ice Extreme regulator and octopus and a Puck Mission 2 console, worth £620

THE TONY BACKHURST SCUBA TRAVEL LIVEABOARD CATEGORY

Ten-minute maximum open style (must have been filmed by a resident liveaboard or dive centre videographer

Ten-minute maximum short, open to all comers - suggested categories include scientific; imaginative; humorous; storyboard and holiday
FIRST: £500 cheque

RULES FOR VIDEO


  • All submissions must be PAL format on DVD
  • Films must have been shot or broadcast during 2006/7
  • The six finalists' films will be shown throughout the show on Friday and Saturday, interspersing documentaries with shorts
  • Judging will take place in advance of the Go Diving! show and the decision of the judges will be final.
