Fantasea Nikon D80 & Canon EOS 400D On the Way

Fantasea has announced that new housings for the Nikon D80 and the Canon EOS 400D (Rebel XTi) will be available by the end of March. Both housings list at $1,099 are rated to a depth of 60 meters (200ft) and include ports for the "Kit" lenses and other features.

Both housings offer a good way to get into underwater DSLR. So one of the questions which becomes obvious is which one to buy? If you already have lenses or accessories for a particular camera brand, your decision may already been made. If you do not have such factors influencing you, it would appear that the Canon will have the edge on first glance since it is less expensive to buy a camera with a lense as a "kit". In the U.S. the standard Nikon D80 kit costs about $400 more than the Canon EOS 400D (Rebel XTi), but the Nikon D80 kit includes an 18-135mm lense. The standard Canon 400D/XTi camera kit includes only the 18-55mm zoom lense. The Fantasea D80 housing comes with a port for a 18-55mm zoom lense and the Fantasea 400D housings comes with a port for an 18-70mm zoom lense. So with Canon you will be able to shoot right off the bat without further expenditures for other lenses or ports. Of course this should not be the final factor in what you purchase, but with both cameras being close in quality/price point, it is a factor to look at. The savings may be worth the trade-off of other factors between the choices.
