HD-camcorders are getting DSLR-competitors

Today Canon has lifted the secret of the EOS 5D´s successor and to my great surprise this year's product feature of the Photokina seems to be a DSLR with the ability to capture HD movies. It´s an obvious development after the evolutionary stages sensor-cleaning and live-view in the last years. Canon now has struck back with the EOS 5D Mark II and gained an edge over the recently announced Nikon D90
For underwater filmmakers it´s a very new and interesting feature to capture short HD-movies with a DSLR. Underwater zoom lenses for camcorders are expensive, real fisheyes are very rare below and even above the surface and can exceed a limit of 2000€ without difficulties. For DSLR underwater the fisheye is nearly a standard lens, an amount of 500€ marks affordable costs for a DSLR. In combination with a domeport there is an effective usage. Are ultrawide sequences going to be taken by DSLR instead of videosystems in the future?
Another reason for DSLR-movies is the full-frame size of the sensor. Sony`s top model in the HD-consumer sector HDR-HC9) is leading the list with a CMOS-sensor of 1/2.9 inch. Don´t forget it´s nearly a third of an inch cause 2.9 is below the fraction bar.The Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a full frame sensor (24 x 36 mm) has approx. a diagonal of 1.7 inch which is the fivefold size.Themes like photosensitivity and image noise are awakening enthusiasm even among HD-videographers.
Focusing of the moving pictures and coding into a suitable video format might be the greatest challenges for Nikon and Canon. Coding of the pictures will be the bottleneck, however there is no weakness in resolution or optical quality expected. Time will show if both manufacturers will succeed in finding codecs for videos free of judder and artifacts.
Very soon we will certainly report about practical tests which we are awaiting eagerly, too. For sure - Photokina 2008 is getting thrilling!
5D MkII is not a competitor for RED system but it's a good tool for budget events.
Really its an high featured camera to use and moreover,it will suit for the professional photographers...

Nikon´s D90 captures using the MJPEG-format (720p) now are confronting round HD-movies (H.264 QT-movies) of 1920x1080p with 30 fps. Both cameras cannot compete with genuine HDV or AVCHD camcorders because AF during capturing is not yet clarified. Nikon already has declared that there is no utilization of autofocus spell capturing. Now we are waiting for Canon´s gear hands-on previews because the operating law is not acknowledged yet. Ravine retributory has shown two videoclips on the web but the possible of this new bailiwick is exclusive vaguely percebtible.
