Registration Day

Razi proudly presents his
new SanDisk 1GB memory card

One of the registration tables
surrounded by contestants
The first day of the Shootout started with positive odds. During the last days we always observed cloudy skies in the morning. Today the sun was constantly smiling into our lenses. The program for the shootout participants included contest registration and some local underwater photographic exercises. Photos participating in the live shootout may not be taken before tomorrow.

For participating in the live Shootout each underwater photographer has to personally register and receives a participant kit in return. The first 100 registered contestants received a special surprise. SanDisk was generous enough to donate a 1GB CompactFlash or SD-Card of the latest Generation for each participant (Editors comment: digital photographers in this contest really get spoiled!). The organizers were busy to register new participants during the whole day. Before closing more than one hundred new contestants were registered and tomorrow is still time to enrol.

During the next days one of the classrooms at the Manta Diving Centre is transformed into the Live Shootouts Headquarter. Every evening the contestants will be able to store their images on one of the eight computer terminals that have been prepared to accept. At the End of the week, each photographer has to pick his five best images for the jury.
Waterbabys and a visit at Dolphin Reef
To some journalists (including us) this day has some imagery highlights in store. While I decided on practicing with my camera on the house reed, Lars visited the pool of the local swimming club. There he had an appointment with Eilat’s next generation of divers.

In the afternoon we were transferred by MiniBus to the famous Dolphin Reef. The Dolphin Reef in Eilat is an institution that enables the interaction with a pod of friendly dolphins in open water. In the underwater park, where interaction takes place, you will also find different objects to breed corals on an artificial reef. A dive in this environment is a unique experience. While you dive between these strange objects from Captain Hook’s adventure you suddenly hear click sounds emitted by the dolphins. Soon after that you are surrounded by swift gliding mammals with a wonderful smile. When they pass close-by they leave an impressive pressure wave, which sometimes moved our underwater housings back and forth.
