SanDisk RedSea Underwater Photo Competition 2006 Live Webcast

Introduction | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | more photos...

Day 2
We are sitting in the lobby of the Ambassador Hotel together with Adam Butler and Louisa Russell (soon to be “Butlert” by Adam – don’t get this wrong they are getting married in October). They both work as underwater photographers with OceanCollege in Sharm El Sheikh and came here to participate in the contest. Before Adam began his journey into the underwater imaging world he worked for Associated Press (AP) in London and covered five wars and five rugby world cups. Instead of bothering you with not so amusing war images or boring sport (that is Andi’s very personal opinion) we are happy to share his decent underwater portfolio with you. You can find more of Adams photos on his internet website butlersweb.com.
Extreme measures

Andi after a long dive
Some competitors are going to extreme lengths to maximize their chance of winning. Desperate measures include: Nightdives two hours after the competition has started, followed by 6 am dawn dives (Noam Kortler), 18 litre steel tank and dry suit to stay until august and the water warms up. Andi was opposing this and wanted to demonstrate real man behaviour by staying 123 minutes, with a 10 litre tank and a shorty, but regretted this shortly after the 45th minute. If there would have been a way to Bluetooth/WiFi the images back to the dive centre they would have done it.
Gear lust and infinitive space

Ikelite setup

Adam Butler with his gear after a dive
Although the organizers now count several hundred registered competitors there is still a great feeling of space in the water. Any diver you occasionally meet of course carries a camera and will give you a friendly greeting. We used the surface interval to have some #### chat and have a detailed look at all the big cameras. The most popular strobe in this contest is definitely the Ikelite DS-125. You find it all over the place and connected with many different housing brands. Some Ikelite owners have been posing with their new eTTL circuit and swear that this is going to be the winning advantage in the contest. Also you can observe a huge amount of recent DSLR cameras and housings. Not to forget Tibor’s brand new SUBAL D200 housing that was just readied before his departure. The SUBAL housing also features a current Heinrichs DTTL-Converter that has been nicely integrated in the housing. But it’s worth mentioning that it is not the equipment that influences the decent picture. In the hands of a skilled photographer even the lousiest camera can produce the winning shot. We promise to write more about compact cameras tomorrow.
