SanDisk RedSea Underwater Photo Competition 2006 Live Webcast

Introduction | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | more photos...

Day 4

People downloading their images
We are a little late on updating this report and apologize that you did not get the latest news in the morning as usual. We promise to do better tonight as there are no more deadlines or parties we could “suffer” from.

Yes, I know… some of you sit in the office reading this and ask: “What do they complain about?” – But the life of a SanDisk RedSea Underwater Photo competitor is tough. Before closing we observed three shooter profiles. We had,...

  1. panic photo dives
"it is my last-minute chance to produce the shot"
  2. panic photo picking
"I do not know which photo to put in the competition"
  3. panic to party
"I hope they have enough to drink at the dolphin reef"
Diving the Satil Wreck
I found it very late and it was a really nice surprise. Just approximately 250m from the Manta Diving Centre is another shore entry to the Red Sea. It marks the passage to the Satil Wreck. Lars first experience with wrecks in this area kept me from exploring it for photographic opportunities during the early days of the shootout, but as I had most of my shots ready for the contest, I wanted to give it a relaxed and explorative try. When the giant mast opened up in front of me I suddenly remembered that another German photographer strongly recommended this wreck to me, when I informed him about my passion for red soft corals that grow on green wrecks. If you agree with my taste you should not miss that wreck dive when you plan your own dives in Eilat.
Hotel Picture in Dusk

Our daily opening shot is a crop from one of my pictures that did not make it into the contest (my personal decision). It illustrates the beautiful Ambassador Hotel at dusk and was planned as a half and half shot. We can confirm that food and service have been great. The seamless integration with the Manta Diving Centre makes it a great place to start out digital plunges on the Coral Beach. Apart from accommodation details we observed a huge effort "to create images". People carried stuff, such as mirrors, clothing and other objects into the sea. We are exited to see some of the creative results tomorrow. So far we can only share one of my mediocre attempts to try something different. Lars tried hard to pose as good as Claudia Schiffer but somehow the Bikini just wouldn’t fit him! We already had a sneak peek look at some of the other images from the competition and suggest you to return for more precious models (and bikinis) tomorrow.
Dolphin Reef Party

We arrived again at the Dolphin Reef Facility. This time we found it in a leisure beach party atmosphere, where people gathered in the Tiki-Bar. If you spend some time in the underwater photography community you might recognize names, such as Amous Nachoum (BigAnimals.com), Daniel Mercier (Antibes Festival) and Osku Puukila (SUUNTO’s Testpilot). The local staff kept the beer and wine pouring until 2 o’clock in the morning. This led to some very strange table discussions about camels and current camera technology. Within all this my Canon 5D kept wandering around and took photos of the people. So if Lars and I failed to put your name under one of the party images please receive our warmest regrets. You certainly did a great picture! Here are some more to enjoy...
