Help needed from someone who has a DS 125.

Just bought the strobe new and the reflector seems loose to me. Its hard to gauge exactly how much movent but I would guess the reflector assembly slides back and forward in the tube by a little less than 1/8”

Pointing the strobe at the ceiling the modelling light is a circular spot. Pointing it down at the floor results in a darker centre with a bright outer ring. If you shake the unit it rattles. Its not the bulb by the way.

I shipped the first unit back and have just recieved a replacement which is exactly the same. I’ve spoken to Ikelite service dept and they say it shouldn’t move but I’m not entirely sure I got my explanation across properly.

My concern is that if the modelling light beam pattern is affected, so is the strobe beam, the inner and outer reflectors move together.

Is this normal on the 125 please.

Hi Balrog,

maybe you could upload some images, because I can hardly imagine how much
loose the reflector/diffusor is!

I used the strobe last year and the diffusor is not completely tight if you might it,
but the modeling light isn’t a problem at all. The light fired from the strobe is much
more intense. So you wont see any light from the modeling light within your
pictures.

Thanks for your reply Lars. Yes, correct, I’m not worried about the modelling light, just the strobe pattern. The two reflectors are moving together so I guess its happening to both strobe and modeller. Its just that the modelling light is easier to show.

Both with the strobe at 1m from the surface and same exposure and no diffuser.

.
Here’s the modelling light with the strobe pointing down. It has a diameter of about 18”

.
And when pointing up, a dameter of about 9”

Lars,

I guess Balrog mens that the reflector (inside the strobe) is loose and moves when he moves the strobe.
Hence the rattling. If it is that way the strobe needs service.

The diffuser outside the tobe is always a bit loose and thats fine.

Yes thats right Mexwell. Figured it shouldn’t be like that but as I’ve now had two new units which were the same, I was starting to wonder. Dodgy batch maybe.

So I send this one back too :(

Thought I was getting a good deal importing from the States but this is now getting complicated with duty refunds. Thankfully the vendor’s being cooperative.
