First, I hope this topic is placed in the right area.

I used to have a Canon S40 w. Canon UW house and Sea & Sea YS25DX strobe. Unfortunately the camera it self has been stolen and I need to get a new one - but since its some years since I bought my gear things has changed so I cant get a camera that will fit into the old house.

However I’d like a House that can be attached to my Sea & Sea YS25DX strobe and have a question. The “new” houses all have dimmed plastic in the flash area and since the strobe is activated by the internal flash firing through a optic fiber cable. Will the flash be able to activate the strobe through the dimmed plastic on the new houses?

I saw that Sea & Sea have discontinued this solution and was wondering if this could be the reason?

Anyone using a newer canon housing?

Sorry to hear abou the camera, I hate to hear that.  You could try eBay, they have some cameras in the $80 range, may be worth it to have a back up system if you go for a new one.

The newer housings should still be able to trigger the strobes, I am not sure which housing you are looking at and whether it is darker than the ones I have seen, but the light/diffuser is still putting out light.

As to Sea & Sea discontinuing strobes, I do not think it has to do with this as much as just normal changing of things, newer toys and get rid of the old ones.  Though I often find myself missing some of the older ones, like the YS-90DX.

The ‘dimming’ in the flash area you refer to is (I assume) a diffuser, intended to give a wider and more even spread of light.  Of course diffusers do slightly reduce the light intensity compared to a completely transparent window, but not by very much, otherwise the diffuser would be defeating the object of the flash, i.e. illuminating the scene.

I would have thought that the amount of light needed to trigger a fibre-optic strobe link would be small compared to the normal output of the flash, so I would be surprised if a diffuser would prevent the use of the fibre-optic cable.

From recollection, most of the newer Canon housings do have a diffuser, but it is usually removable (even underwater) so if you find it is causing problems, you should be able to remove it if it is causing problems.
