I’ve been using an Olympus SP350 in a PT30 housing for a while and am thinking of adding a strobe.  From members and other recomendations I’m thinking of one of the Inon units.
I would like to know owners experince of the models with a modeling light incorporated.
To be specific is it bright enough to assist the auto focus function which I find a weakness with the SP350 and does it actually point to the middle of the area to be lighted acturately ie does it actually help in positioning of the stobe?
Possibly it’s better to have a separate LED torch with auto cut off on strobe firing?
Any other comments on the merits of modelling lights would be appreciated.

hi mark,

the modeling light of the inons is rather useful to help position the strobes ... to support the autofokus they help only theoreticly ... because if you position the strobe straight at the subject (so the modeling light illuminates it) you risk strong backscatter (reflecting particles). in supermacro they are ok to support the autofokus, as you can straight aim the strobes on the nudibranch or whatever ... but with normal portait shots ... not so much. here a dedicatet focuslight helps more.

but: the focus of the sp350 will never be “fast” ... it might just get less slow.

good luck with the strobe.
