Hi there,

Currrently I’m shooting in Olympus C-5050 with Ikelite strobes and housing and feel it’s about time to upgrade it. the stills are quite ok, but the video is poor. Most of my dives are deep, up to 100 meters, so I would like a housing to match my requirements.

I am interested in the following cameras:
1. Canon G9
2. Canon S5is
3. Nikon p5100

They all have Ikelite housing which is good for 60 mt. only.
Does anyone know about a housing planned for deeper deapths for these cameras, or must I pass to the DSLR side?

Thanx

hi
i understand that sea&sea;are putting out a alumininum housing for the g9 , worth a look .

if your looking at diving to 100m then DSLR housed may be a better option though, as they can deal with low light / high iso shooting better.

Thanks for the info. I have sent an e-mail to sea&sea;and i’ll post their reply when I’ll get it. as there is already a 200ft/60mt housing for the G9 (as well as for the S5 IS and the Nikon 5100) it will matter significantly if someone will release a housing with better depth rate than Ikelite’s.

Regarding the recommendation to switch to DSLR - as I’m using two strobes, it doesn’t make a big difference to switch because of theISO ratings. right now, I usually choose the lowest possible (iso 64).

I just stumbled across THIS yesterday. The new Patima G9 houisng. All aluminum & 120m depth rating. $957 at this online store, but I haven’t seen anything else about it anywhere else.

Sea&Sea;also had anounced all aluminum houisng for the G9, but I haven’t been able to dig it up anywhere (other than various announcements and press releases).

I don’t know much about the S5, but here is another housing for the P5000/5100 by Fisheye that I also stumbled across yesterday. LINK.  I can’t find much other info on it anywhere else, but one site appeared to say that it’s made of ABS plastic and is only rated to 60m. But the site was in japanese which I don’t know how to speak or read.

I think pretty much any housing rated to 200ft will make it to 300ft

they just don’t rate it for that as not many divers do those depths and they can’t test for continual depth of that amount for very long (i think)

Taking any housing deeper than recommended is always a risk, but not much more of one than just getting in the water with it.

My guess is that at depth most housings have trouble keeping the controls working well.
