I am sure you will enjoy your new kit. The 5D is one amazing camera that produces outstanding files. I use it with the same lenses as you are getting plus the Sigma 50mm macro.

Andreas’ advice is spot-on and as he also says, Ikelite via their web site (which is very comprehensive) and by email if you get stuck, will give you all the guidance you need.

Good shooting

Hi all,
New to the board and in the first month of shooting my 30 D in Aquatica housing with DS 125 Ikelite strobe (leftover from my Olympus 5050 set up), 17-85 lens with dome port and diopter.  I had actually bought the lens for a land trip and hope to move to macro but couldn’t stand not having an underwater camera so committed to the dome for now. This has worked out as I am getting used to camera controls and what it can do. Very pleased with the results so far.

Hi together,
this might not fit exactly in this topic, my excuse. Still I would be grateful for some advice. I am planing to get a UW Housing for my new EOS 5D in combination with a Dome Port and a Flat Port for the following lenses:
EF 100 F2.8 macro USM
EF 15mm F2.8
EF 16-35mm F2.8 L USM (77mm filter size, not the new even bigger 16-35mm F2.8 L II USM)

Since the choice is big I would like to ask for your advise. Ther are bigger differences in the Dome port size(170mm up to 240mm) even all specified for the use on a Full Frame sensor of the 5D. Do they have optical differences?

I decided for this camera since I am planing to invest in a UW housing which is aswell several K-EURO and I hope I can justify the investment for a time period of 10years(hopefully the housing gets not flooded. Therefore I was not convinced that a 400D / 30D would satisfy my personal photo interest above the surface.

I know some of you use the Hugyfot ore Ikelite. I find not a lot about Sea&Sea;, Zillon.....?
Are there any other details I have to take care about choosing a Dome port size, OK a extension ring must fit to the lens size. The Inon Port system is really interesting for macro as far as I could se but no housings for a 5D.

Prize is not everything but my money resources are also not inexhaustible.

Thanks four your comments.
Matthias

Hi All
I just housed my 400D in an Ikelite housing, I got the 8” Dome last week . To date I’ve used the18 - 70mm and
a Sigma 10 - 20. Tomorrow will be picking up a Sigma 50mm macro. Only managed three dives so far in poor conditions.

Mathias, I am realy happy with the Ikelite housing and strobes.
I have de 17-40mm. zoom and the 100mm. macro. I got the 8’ dome port which is better for over/under photos.

I think as cameras keep getting better every day now, it is not worth it to get one of those really expensive housings anymore, I am pretty sure you will change your camera before 10 years, as you say.

Ikelite is a very good balance between quality and price...in my opinion.

hope this helps,

Hi Andi - Just starting to use a Canon 40d w/Hugyfot Housing and Inon z-240 strobe with the heinrichsweikamp converter.  I just posted a question in the strobe forum and copied it here too just in case, apologies for the double post.  I’m heading the the Maldives next Friday and desperate to get my kit working properly.  Lea suggested I find you here for some help..

cheers
Sean

I’m playing with a new setup consisting of a:

Hugyfot Housing
Canon 40d Body w/ 10-22mm Lens
heinrichsweikamp TTL converter
Inon z-240 Strobe
Nikonos 5-pin connector

I was in the pool trying to get everything working and found that on Aperture Priority mode, I wasn’t getting the strobe to fire correctly.  I’m sure it is all down to novice error and I’m turning to the forum for help.  In general, the photos were completely underexposed although the strobe did fire.

When I put the camera in A-DEP mode, it seemed to work well, also in full auto and manual.  While I’m sure I’ll master manual mode, I was hoping that the TTL converter would allow me to use Aperture Priority for some quick shots.

If you can recommend the particular settings for both the camera and strobe I would be most thankful.

From what I’ve been told, to get TTL, the strobe settings are:  S-TTL (Left Knob), TTL (Right Knob), and Button In (lower right).  I’ve also seen that the upper right knob should be a 12 o’clock (or B position).  Neither worked for me.

I’ve put the camera into Average Strobe Metering mode for external flash and I’ve been primarily playing with spot metering.

I found that S-TTL over exposed and S-TTL (low) was better but under exposed.

Thoughts Recommendations ???

Thanks in advance

Matthias,

I’m a professional and I use the same lens you mention on a 5D in an Aquatica Housing with Ikelight 125’s.  The 16-35 (older one) has focus issues on the corners, so I recommend stopping down to lessen the effect.  I replaced mine with the new one and have not had the opportunity to evaluate the differnace.
I am using a plexi-glass dome but would like to upgrade to glass...glass is very expensive.

There is an issue of reflection on the indsie of the dome...seeing the lens in the image file.  I have covered the front of the lens, around the glass, with black felt to reduce the reflection.

Wonderful image files with low noise.

Hi Andi

I am brand new to UW photography and just got the SEASEA MDX-40 with twin Y250 pro flash guns would like advice on following:

1. what are the best arms to use for strobes short or long for WA and Macro
2. what is best for macro one or two strobes
3. On Live view using P , TV , AV. M with my Cannon EOS 40D I cannot get strobes to fire activate but if I use through viewfinder they function
4 I plan to buy a EF-S 60 mm f/2.8 Macro Lens is this the right one

Look forward to any feedback

I would either recommend a fisheye lens or a macro lens. But
as you already have a wide angle lens I would recommend to
choose a macro lens for more versatility. I don’t know your
underwater photography skills, but shooting with a 100mm
macro lens demands patients and and some experience.
Therefore I would recommend starting with a 50mm macro
lens.

ciao Lars

Hi ,
I want to be a Canon DSLR user too.  I am currently considering an upgrade from a very well used Olympus C5050, w/Inon D-2000 Strobe to a Canon XTI w/ Seatool Housing, Inon 45’Angle viewfinder, Canon 18-55mm lens, 100mm lens w/ports and a 3Xmacro-mate.  I had originally thought I would have to replace the Inon Srobe, but have recently found out I could use it with this Canon model in STTL mode. I would like to keep this strobe. I am concerned about a couple of things about the camera and know your group can help.  I shoot manual for the most part and mostly macro but some wide-angle.
1.  Are Canon lens motors more delicate as compared to Nikon?
2.  Will the auto-focus work as well or better then the Oly C5050?
3.  Will I need to get the gear for manual focus? What is the advantage or disadvantage?
4.  Would the 60mm lens be a better choice with the macro-mate then the 100mm?

I have heard Canon lens motors have a history of failure.  I don’t know if this is true. I would like to hear from any Canon users about their experiences.  I travel alot to dive and want to make sure the glass is dependable. I am wondering if I will need to buy the “gear” to enable manual focus and if anyone is using this.  I am not sure about the precision of my ability to manually focus underwater compared to the cameras so I have been concerned about auto-focus speed.

Thanks.

Hej Susan.
I’l make it short:
1:If you mean fragile then no.
2:Yes.. Canon makes fantastic lenses.
3:asking me..No. AF today is so good so i will be very surpriced if you can do it better yourself.
4:For macro it depends allot where you are diving. ( how clear is the water ) But i would go for the Sigma 70mmf/2,8. Good price and very sharp.
For your last Q: I have not heard anything about Canon having failers on there lens motors.

Kenneth

Kenneth,

I had thought as much about the auto-focus vs. the manual focus but had to ask anyway.  It’s good to know I won’t have to add to my “to do” list underwater, but it might be interesting to try.  I will take a look at the sigma lens before I buy.

Safe diving,

Susan
