first of all: you will be amazed of the autofocus. i was so happy, when i switched from my oympus compact.
the 60mm and the 100mm canon are both very good lenses.but foget about the 17-55, the kitlens is not so good. save that money.
if you use the 60 with a macromate you have to go very close and it is not so usefull. you can use the combi for nudibranches, there it is ok.
i use the 60mm alone and the 100mm with a inon-diopter (like the macromate). another good combi with the 100mm is a teleconverter for great supermacro.
autofokus is very good on these lenses. but if you want manual focus and want so save the focus-gear, you can programm the autofocus on the * button. then you prefocus with the * button and move the camera in and out for manual. works very good.
for real manual focus consider the INON MRS ports, i use them. you can manualy focus with a magnetic ring straight on the lens. it is a very nice solution. i think you can get these inon ports with adapters for seatool housings.
Serge,
It helps very much. I really liked many of the features and the glass on my Oly. I wouldn’t switch at all except for all of the worn down buttons. Although, there is considerable shutter delay, it can be compensated for. I have used wet mounts before, so I may try some combination on the new rig. I especially liked your manual focus suggestions and will probably give both a try. I agree the 17-55 kit lens does not appeal to me, but it comes with the camera and I don’t think I can ditch it to get a price break. I will definitely consider the INON MRS ports. I have some concerns about the view finder and my own visibility..
hello,
i’m from belgium, and at the moment a resident @ mauritius. I’ve always used the sea and sea 8000g with the ys27 strobe.
I’m planning on getting the ikelite housing for my 450d… I have until now no experience with dslr underwater, so i would like few bit of advice if possible.
i think the best flash will be a new one from ikelite witl ttl on board for the best results? If so, wich one do you recommend? Maybe use my ys27 if needed for a second flash as slave?
I have the canon 17-85 is, 28-135 is, and the kitlenses 18-55 and 70-200. At the moment a new lens like 15 fisheye or 60 macro is a bit too much for my budget (if someone has an interesting deal for me, just mail ), so i think to start the 17-85 will do?
i have a cannon 40D and in the process of buying a ike housing for my 40d and would like some feed back from people with the same setup,i am first getting a macro port for my cannon 60mm lens
then in a few months will get a tonkina 10-17 lens and 8 inch dome port my question is about the buoyancy of the macro port and 1 ds 125 what i currently have and the 8 inch dome port
and 2 ds 125 strobes ,if there is a weight issue i was thinking of purchasing the stix flotation system,is there any members using them and if so are they any good?
I will also be looking at buying another ds125 when i get the tonkina, but i may have problems getting them as they are being discontinued,is there there any problems matching a ds125 with the new ds160 power rating wise
with the TTL and manual control, any help would be appreciated
Steve:-)
I’ve been using a 400D in an Ikelite housing for the last year or so. I have the Sigma 10-20mm and Tokina 10-17 for wide angle behind the 8” dome. While a bit of a handfull topside I find it well balaced once submerged. for macro I use a Sigma 50mm Macro and sometimes the kit (18-55mm) lens with diopters.

aquaman how many strobes do you use when doing macro,if 1 is it negative or positve?
Hi there guys, i’m new to this slr stuff underwater so a little bit of advice would be sweet!
I’m organising an ikelite housing and 160 strobe for my 400D, so I’ve never been underwater with an slr as yet
I was mainly into macro with my point and shoot, nudi’s and other little interesting critters, so i know i’m looking for a macro lens
I was thinking of either the canon 50mm/ 2.5 or 60mm/ 2.8.
can anyone tell me what would be the efective difference between the 2, and why is the 60mm nearly double the price?
any advice would great

I could be wrong but isn’t the 60mm a 1 -1 macro whilst the 50mm isn’t macro.
yes aquaman, that’s the one thing I did pick up on further reading.
so how exactly does this make the difference when it comes to using the lens?
and as a beginer, is there any pro’s cons to whether i get a true 1-1 macro or 1-0.5?
from my understanding the 60mm is a USM lens which is a much faster focusing lens then the 50mm which is a major plus when shooting macro,i have just purchased a 60mm and look forward to trying it out
hey thanks scuba-1
let me know how the new lens works out for you.
between the few forums i’ve chatted on, i’m getting a great rap on the 60mm
so hopefully i will order it this week sometime!!!
then a lot of learning to do…
