hi

was wondering if anyone had anyluck with the canon G9 underwater - I am thinking of the wide angle issue in particular- the camera comes with a 35mm lens at the widest and needs a enormous wide angle attachment lens on the surface to give it a 28mm range - I like the functions and control on the camera and the picture quality is superb, I hear that sea and sea is coming out with a housing, but very expensive, the orginal canon housing has one of these oval shaped lens port that is difficult to fit any attachment lens on....

any info or suggestion ?

Hi.

Ikelite do a housing for the G9.  An option with this housing is to change to a short port, which allows the use of wide angle adapters without any major problems with vignetting etc.

There’s quite a few threads on this subject on the forums at http://www.wetpixel.com.  Just search for Canon G9 and they will pop up!

regards

Can anybody tell me - what exactly happens if you use that “short port”? As I understand the port restricts lens movement - does that mean that if you accidentally try a full zoom, the lens will hit the port’s front element? How G9 reacts to this situation?

I don’t have this camera / housing combo, however, I suspect there is a risk of damage to the port glass / perspex (although probably minor), and as far as I am aware, the camera will shut down when its zoom is impeded by the short port.  During shutdown, the lens retracts as usual, and presumably you can turn the camera back on to continue use.

G9 is a great camera, only slightly compromised by this issue - it will shut down and is simply solved by switching back on.  Just remember to ensure zoom is not engaged, or it will happen again...and again…

Anyway, there is a G10.....28mm wide angle and new Canon housing will be available, alongwith Ikelite not far behind.  See Photokina announcements.
