Hello everybody,

Just joined the forum as I need some advice.

For the last couple of years I’ve enjoyed my Oly E-330 with a Fantasea housing (see current setup below), however last june my wife bought me a Canon PowerShot SX1 IS for my bday and I’m now thinking to buy Ikelite 6148 TTL Underwater Housing for the Canon and sell the Fantasea.

The general idea is to use HD video as well as taking pics with the new setup, however while the Canon HD is v.good the image quality of the SX1 is no match for the E-330… am I going to regret it? Any advice or 2nd opinion?

Many thanks,
L

My current setup:

Olympus E-330 with 50mm Macro & 14-45mm lenses
Fantasea FE-330N Housing w/std 104mm port,
Fantasea FFL-50 strobe housing & sync cord
Med arms (2x7” sections, clamps, adapters)
LED44 (focus light)
Flex arm 18 (to hold focus light)

Hi,

i am not sure about the new gear but i have the E330 and still can not get it in the water due to issues with the Olympus housing. i hear only the best reports about Ikelite and regret having not bought that housing instead.
Let me know if you sell off your old housing as i might be interested!
would your old strobe talk to the new housing, thats the worst part if you have to upgrade everything.

I would say you only live once if you are going to get sharper pics then go the upgrade just check all componets talk to each other before committing to prevent ending up in my situation.

regards

p.s.
most of the guys in my dive club have ikelites and love them, all my kit is currently with Olympus in Syd whilst they try to get it to work if it doesnt then once i can afford it i would upgrade to an ikelite housing for sure.

Hi AquaGirl,

Sharper pics ... funny enough that is actually my main issue, I think the picture quality will suffer as the PowertShot images are not as good as the E-330, however I will gain an extra feature (HD movies) and that alone is why I was thinking to switch & was asking for 2nd opinions etc.

My current setup uses FFL-50 housing which hosts a standard Olympus FL-50 (or FL-50R) flash unit so if I go with Canon & Ikelite I will need a new strobe. Movies too might required something different then a simple flash unit anyway (researching on that…)

If I decide to switch gear will let you know ... however I wish you the best with your current setup; hopefully Olympus will come back with a solution soon!

BTW have a look at this article on underwater strobes & connections while reading the article I was wondering if your problem is less about connectivity and more about sync shutter speed…

regards

Hi All,

My strobes finally worked, Oly worked out i had been supplied a faulty TTL which was stuffing everything up, so they replaced it confirmed it worked and posted it all back.
Finally got it in the water and 3 out of 3 times its leaked! i found a forum on digitaldiver.net where several people talk of the same experience with the PT-E03 the next housing up. It would appear that when in the shallows if you tilt your housing on a certain angle water seeps in through the double O ring system, problem is its so minor there are no bubbles, so i sit there in the waist deep water playing, testing, pressing buttons, tilting up and down and then after about 5 min when i finally think i am ready to start my dive i do one more visual and see about a teaspoon amount of water rolling around inside!

Has anyone else heard of this problem?

regards, hmmm

I have been using the Olympus 410 in the PT-e03 housing for about 3 years, have never had a leak or discovered any moisture in the camera after a dive. I have taken it on around 60 or so dives, but none deeper than about 70 feet.

Hi Rmark,

I have not had a chance to try my kit in the ocean yet, i got it all back and tested it in a bucket of water, found the leak and filmed and emailed it to Olympus. Turns out the manual focus knob on the side was (factory) faulty they replaced it and sent it back to me. So after all that several faulty items later and over a year of not being able to use it, i had it in apparent working order.
Well that was 13 months ago, 5 days after i got the kit back i found out i was pregnant and could not dive :O) Although i have an amazing little girl to show for 13 months out of the water i am yet to try the housing again.

I’m moving to South Island NZ in 5 weeks and hope to get back in the water when i get there. I am really glad to hear that the kit has worked for you, that gives me hope that i will get it all working (albeit 3 years on after buying the ### housing).

If and when it all finally works i will be sure to get back on here and tell my happy tale!

Regards

Hi All,

I am new to this site so i am not sure if this is a good place to ask this question or not.

I have just upgraded from an Olympus point n shoot in underwater housing to an Olympus DSLR E330 in underwater housing PT-E02. Problem is now i am stuck for the strobe part as i don’t want the silly sit on top flash Olympus offer.

I am seeking advise, i see there is a connector on the inside of the PT-E02 which i assume can connect to the camera some how, then i guess i need another cable outside from housing to a strobe.

Does anyone have any advice from using the PT-E02 with the E330?????? I have a little SeaNSea strobe that works off a camera’s flash (no good at the moment) this should make a good second slave strobe if i can get a 1st stage one connected to the camera.

Olympus have been little help, sad to say as i do love their camera’s.

Cheers :O)
