Hi,
I’m new to UW photo.
I actually own a Canon Powershot S45 and its dedicated UW case WP-DC300.

Of course, using only the integrated flash (in line with the optics...), I mostly get “snowed” pictures. smile

So, I’m looking around for external devices.

There is anyone using a similar configuration than mine?
what about Sea&Sea YS25DX and YS90DX?
Anyone experienced these flashes?

thanks in advance!

Hi,

If you have a look to Canon talk, there is TANK using YS-90.
His homepage is http://www.scubabreaks.com/, have a look.

I have same equipement than you, S-45 + WP-DC300 and soon I’ll go for the YS-90 AUTO.

I have chosen 90 because of higher angle coverage than 25 and Nikonos cord, useful if in the future you want to sell it or upgrade to DSLR.

I will tell you the results ...
Daniel.

Hi There

I own a CANON A70 with Canon WP-DC 700 housing.  Just got a YS-90 AUTO strobe and it will be my first time using the strobe.  Am taking macro shots for my forthcoming dive trip, any tips especially where the strobe is concerned?

Thanks

Hi Massimiliano,

I don’t have the exact same set-up (Canon Powershot A70 + YS90-DX) but here are a few comments about the Sea&Sea strobes. If you can affford it, go for the YS90DX (or the YS90Auto). It has a manual intensity controler that is helpful when shooting in manual mode. If you trigger this flash with the Sea&Sea optical fiber it is the only mode you can use with the flash. I use Matthias Digital mentionned in an other answer. This adapter allows to use the Av, Tv and P modes with something close to TTL. Unfortunately the A70 set the aperture to F/2.8 when the Tv mode is use and the exposure to 1/60 when the Av mode is used. I will probably shoot most of my pictures in manual mode in the future. It’s not a very big deal to do so with instant digital feedback on the LCD.

There are rumors that the YS90-DX will be discontinued in a near future. I don’t know if someone started this in response to Sea&Sea transfering it’s business to Tusa in USA or if it is something real. It may also make sense because the YS90 Auto is out and probably doesn’t cost much to produce.

The YS25-DX is not a bad choice either but it is less powerful has less output control setting and covers a smaller field.

Have you consider the Inon strobes?

Hi,

I am about to buy Canon S60 and WC-DC40 box.
Want to hear your comments on YS90 Auto - how is it?

Thanks.

I’m not exactly clear on what the difference is between the DX and the Auto on any of these YS strobes. Could someone clear this up for me? What can you do with an Auto that you couldn’t do with a DX?

Thanks,
Matt.

Hi zlatin,

It makes no or just a slight difference between using a YS90 and the digital adaptor on any digital camera.

The WP-DC 40 has a diffusor which can be exchanged by a light blocking thing. That is better if you want to use a ext. flash.

I have a WP-DC 300 with a S50 and that is very much more difficult blocking the internal flash.

I’m not exactly clear on what the difference is between the DX and the Auto on any of these YS strobes.

Yeah, same here. I have read that the DX has been superceded by the auto but apart from that I can’t tell if I can use the Auto in the various modes (TV, M etc) on my Canon Powershot A70.

I’ve seen some great results with the DX and was disappointed to find it has been discontinued after reading reports it could be used in the various modes when coupled with the Matthias Heinrich digital adaptor.

Does using the heinreich adaptor offer advantages over the sea & sea optical cable when used with the YS90Auto?
