I’ve just bought a Canon EOS 7D camera, which creates video in H.264/MOV format (up to 1920x1080) but my editing software (Magix Edit Pro 14) will not touch these MOV files.

thanks

Hi Jimmy,

Mhhh,... for the EOS 5D Mk II and EOS 7D I can only recommend two editing solutions:

Plan #A you are on a MAC and then there is really nothing else but Final Cut Express or Pro

Plan #B you are on a PC and should consider to buy Edius Neo 2 Booster Software

Hi,jimmy

Editing 7D files can strain the fastest PC’s, as I understand it the codec the 7D uses is designed to save space, this needs more power to decode and edit. The work around seems to be to transcode 7D files to a new format, this then makes it easier for current editors to work with the files.

So far I’ve found out the following different options

Option 1
Pinnacle Studio 14 can work with the native files, I’ve had a play with this and it does indeed open the 7D MOV files, I don’t much care for the program though

Option 2
Transcode the files with Neoscene, costs $129 then you can work with the files in vegas/premier. I’ve not tried this option

So for the last week or two I’ve been stuck trying to find a cheapper option,i find a useful guide “How to convert HD MOV, MTS, TOD to be editable for Magix Movie Edit Pro 14?”

http://www.pavtube.com/guide/convert-hd-footages-to-edit-in-magix-movie-edit-pro-14.html

I hope it will be of great help for you

All regards

ok, thanx

I downloaded a demo version and found it was definitly worth buying. One thing I liked about the demo version is that it converted the whole video, not just the first 2 minutes.

I am very pleased with PavTube as it does a fine job of conversion, into any format that I could possibly need - now or in the future.

MOV files profuced by Canon EOS 7D Mark II are a long GOP format that is highly compressed, so it is not a good playing and editing format. Some MOV video player and editing software can not handle this MOV files.
I heard that Pinnacle Studio 14 can natively support 7D MOV files but I have not tested it. You can have a try.

And another solution I recommend is that you convert the 7D footage to the other common format, like MPEG, AVI as that format is easy to edit and play back. That is what I do with my Canon 5D video footage and the results are excellent.

There are rare programs which allows to import and make deal with this high compressed MOV files. Now share a program called Aunsoft Video Converter which can convert and edit Canon 7D MOV footages perfectly.

on the alternative side:

I used to be an avid Pinnacle and Premiere user… but costs on those things were becoming too much for what I was using it for.  Still, good stuff…  but just a bit expensive to have besides a camera, divegear etc.

This year I switched to Ubuntu for my home PC… and found plenty FREE, LEGAL and GOOD alternatives available. I currently am working with KDENLIVE as my tool of preference. it does HD and almost anything you ask it to do… It looks like VEGAS, I am told, and it is easy to use, I experienced.

If you are not too worried about trying something else, maybe just download a copy of UBUNTU, run it from CD and check if you would be able to work with this OS. Then, if so, create a dual boot pc (the install menu is preconfigured and will allow you to do so very easily) Then, when you are running UBUNTU, download and install the latest version of KDENLIVE and you are ready to go.

It might be worth a try… even the standard out of the box ubuntu has some editor preinstalled, I think.

Cheers,

Maurice
