I am shooting, in Cozumel, and my Sea and Sea dome port has developed a serious “ding”, not a scratch, right in the middle of the acyrlllic dome.
It is not affecting most pictures, but a cloudy spot appears on too many pictures. Besides photoshop, is there anything that I can do to minimize the “ding”?  I have heard of using toothpaste, but I want to hear from you professionals, prior to using that approach.
I need an answer fast.

Thanks
Eddie

Hey Eddie,

you can use the Micro-Mesh NC-78-1 ACRYLIC RESTORAL KIT (http://www.micro-surface.com/) to remove light scratches from a acryl surface, but I’m not sure if this really helps in your case. I did not totally understand what you mean by “ding”. Maybe you can send a picture..

ciao Lars

Thanks for the information on repair to scratches in acryllic dome ports.  But this “ding” is more than a scratch; it is an actual chip in the acyrllic.  You can feel the indentation in the dome.  Is there something out there that can “fill in”, not just remove a surface scratch?

Thanks
Eddie

Hi Eddie
I had an u/w scooter bash into a dome port on one of my housings. I polished the edges of the “Ding” with micro fibre and then the whole dome with a Meguiar’s car polish (non-scratching polish), its used for polishing ferrari’s etc..
I concentrated mostly on the “Ding” and its edges. It worked fine and never showed-up again, as water fills the outer hollow, its only the distorted edges of the “Ding” that cause the light dispersion problem and this was gone after polishing.
There is also a resin that can be used to fill deep gauges in acrylic. If you have a light aircraft airport nearby your home, give their maintenance facility a call, as they probably repair acrylic aircraft canopies with damage. This is where I got my microfibre kit from and they do this stuff all of the time.
